I am asking it for a friend who is trying to get into biking.

he has recently done a cbt and got himself a 125cc scooter, MOT & road tax sorted but struggling to get insurance.

He has been quoted between £1800 to £2700 for a bike that is only worth £1900.

Any recommendations of companies to try would be appreciated.

Thanks

Those quotes seem a little on the high side... does your friend have any 'circumstances' that might have caused them?

Probably one of those helpful "still has 6 months of road tax I'll let you have" Facebook Marketplace ads.

It used to MOT and insurance and then tax when you had to display a tax disk, the logic being that if there is no tax then there probably isn't insurance either so check that when nicking them for the tax.

These days as there is ANPR and a central database of insurance there is no need so the requirement was dropped.

How did you manage that one?

If the vehicle isn't on the insurance database then you can't buy tax.

You need insurance first to ride to an MOT test (needs to be booked in advance if you've got no MOT or tax) and only then can you buy tax.

Have a trawl through Facebook MarketFarce, people literally put it in the listings usually accompanied with "lost the V5, you'll need to reapply." Rolling Eyes

The latest one is "I've lost the V5 so needs to be done online" which I believe implies they have it (or the relevant numbers at least) but they don't want you to see the name on it for some reason Smile

caveat emptor

It's insurance first, tax second. But they disabled the instantaneous online insurance check because some (most) insurers were being very slow to update the database, so it was preventing people getting their tax.

But it doesn't matter because if the vehicle is taxed it legally has to be insured - not just when you buy the tax but continuously until it's sold or SORNed.

So if it is taxed and doesn't show up on the insurance DB it will (eventually) trigger a "continuous insurance" fine.

Which is what will happen to the OP's mate if he doesn't get this sorted sharpish.

Sound like Deliveroo/commercial type insurance to me
The guy I know pays £115 a month and he's a mature rider
not a 17 year old

I'm pretty sure you can't have two different valid insurance policies on the same bike. arry, where are you?

the topic is heading the wrong direction so let me clarify it..

A = owns the bike but can't seem to get insurance
but you can't leave them uninsured in London coz they got stolen easily
so it is insured & taxed and used by a family member who doesn't own the bike hence why the bike is taxed.........

You can have as many policies as you want and multiple people can have policies for the same vehicle.

Yep, what you can't do is claim on two overlapping policies for the same thing.
