I know stone masons that will be highly offended to be told that they couldn't replicate the accurancy with modern hand tools. It's just that they tend to work at much smaller scales.

I said modern because they'll be using iron, not bronze, which keeps it's edgefor longer.

In the particular case I mentioned, it was a highly regarded stonemason that told the archaeologists that they'd be unable to reproduce the overall quality. I suspect largely because they simply wouldn't have the time to do so on any job.

The original masons used stone tools rather than any metals as well which is why it's so remarkable.

^^^ in response ...

Trying having a look at some of the work by Chris Dunn (an engineer) on ancient egyptian engineering, it's very interesting.

It doesn't matter a damn how much time and patience you have ... trying to do make these big blobs of granite that precisely with copper chisels is just not possible!

It seem s to be that people just accept what has been taught to them, they seem to lack the ability to think for themselves ... they forget that the knowledge being taught to them isn't always factual, it's a theory, especially in so many areas connected to ancient Egypt.

Examples ...
1) It used to be taught that everything rotated around the
Earth, to say otherwise would have been a quick execution for heresy ... but feck me, turned out it wasn't at the centre!

2) The Sphinx is attributed to a specific pharaoh at a specific point in time, why, because the egyptologists put forward a theory!

Along comes a geologist who proves scientifically that the weathering of the enclosure (from which it was carved) was due to water erosion ... the last time there was significant enough rainfall to create that type of erosion was thousands of years before the classic ancient egyptians existed.

The egyptologists say otherwise though and for some insane reason everyone believes them ... they all just ignore the scientific proof!

The rainfall theory has been widely debunked these days.

You slave. Take this block of stone and emery cloth and rub it until it's a vase. I'll come back in a couple of months and see how you're getting on.

Most of the core structure of the pyramids is limestone. Small amounts of granite were used for some of the detailed structures (walls and roof of the burial chamber, Portcullis, etc.) and some of the outer casing. A lot of the core structure was very roughly shaped and gaps filled with rubble and gypsum mortar to stabilise it. They were not precision engineered the whole way through the structure.

Limestone can be relatively easily worked with copper tools. Granite was probably worked using diorite tools and quartz sand.

It comes down to plenty of time and lots of available labour.

Disproved. The archaeological evidence dates the Sphinx to around 2500BC contemporaneous with the building of the second pyramid for the pharaoh Khafre.

The geologist from an area where he's used to see water erosion sees water erosion. The local geologist that has been looking at erosion for years in the local region sees erosion caused by sand and wind.

The sphinx is recessed into the landscape and so suddenly sand has no wind blowing it and it falls. Eroding as it falls for over 4000 years.

As will water sand will wear the weak patches.

Local geologists are aware of this and are also aware of other geological ecamples outside of this epoch.

There's a clear difference between wind and water eroded sand. Wind blown sand grains are generally much more rounded than water borne sand grains. No geologist worth his salt should confuse the two really.

Unless you go in with a microscope you wouldn't see a difference.

It's the reason why there's soda blasting and sand blasting.

You can see the difference quite easily with a standard x10 field lens - standard kit for any geologist. Smile
