Hey all,
For some reason i found myself owning an old R6 1999. I'll blame covid i think!
It all works, but while warming up it doesn't rev clean, it bogs at around 5-6k rpm. I've never ridden it nor do i plan to, but I want to sell it on in good working order.
Things tried to date:
Carb clean (they were already pretty clean)
Carb sync
Clean fuel
New plugs
New air filter and air box clean out
New battery
Tank bypass (bypassing tank and fuel filter)
Jets appear to be stock and are clear of dirt/blockages
End can change (both aftermarket can's)
RedEx
All produce the same, the plugs helped it start each time though!
When the bike is fully warmed up (80 degrees +), it revs out fine, so I believe its running lean, it needs less fuel once it's warmed up and therefore ok. Some may describe this as normal but I'm not happy with it like this....
Looking for sensible next options please....

I had one of these in 2009, was nothing like this.... that ran perfectly and was the carb version.... even with a little choke it's not happy until it's at full working temp.... this isn't normal for a car or a bike, it's not a 60's F1 car or a 500 2 stroke that should be babied up to temp, ppl need to use these things from the off! 
I've got someone who's aware of this coming to look tonight, subject to pant pulling down offers i'll be doing the below next:
Check spark and look for inconsistencies between the 4 coil sticks... Then (unless there is failing spark on one of more of the coil stick) reluctantly take out the carb again and do a better job of it! As it was all clean I didn't go to town, and i had plugs coming so I probably presumed I sort it with those...
If i had a thermal temp gauge (exhaust headers) and a compression tester I'd look into that, but alas I dont! (YET) |
TLDR.
If you've enthusiastically phaphed with the carburettors, they'll need balanced properly. Assuming that's been done,
if there's wear in a carb/s , it may appear to run balanced at a certain rev range but not at all conditions.
Plug coils difficult to pin down unless dead. Or you are good at reading plugs.
For zost temps a touch probe is probably the easiest to use. An IR temp 'gun' has a wide scan area which makes getting consistently accurate reading a PITA.
