Been doing that mtb thing for a while, fairly reasonable at it, however hit twisted oaks and a guy I was with who's pretty good got absolutely potatoed on a small gap, long story short his ribs exploded and he left his knee skin in his lever bolt...ever since when I come across a small gap I bail. I'll do step downs bigger than my ears, hit the whale tail at twisted first go when I'd been riding a few weeks just full send everywhere, small gaps scare the shit out of me but if I've got a big ass gap or tabletops I'm fine...advise me on how to stop being a pussy.

Can you bunny-hop? Like properly, on the flat, clear a small obstacle. If you have a rock-solid bunny-hop, I'd suspect a smaller gap would be much less of an issue.

Essentially practice the skill of jumping a small gap without the gap being there.

Slightly obvious answer that should have occurred to me sooner and that is follow someone who knows what they're doing through the jumps as then you'll be going the right speed for the jumps.
