I've had the same two computers for a while now so here are the specs of them:

Home PC (built late 2018):

AMD Ryzen 7 2700X,
MSI RTX 3060 Ti Ventus 3 OC (replaced original RTX 2080 Ti),
Gigabyte AORUS Gaming 7 (X470 chipset),
Gigabyte AORUS DDR4 3,200MHz RAM (4 x 8GB),
Samsung 980EVO 1TB NVMe (M.2 SSD).

Office PC (built middle 2018):

AMD Ryzen 7 2600X,
MSI RTX 3090 SUPRIM X OC (replaced original RTX 1660 Super),
Gigabyte AORUS Elite (B450 chipset),
Corsair Vengeance DDR4 3,600MHz RAM (2 x 16GB),
2 x WD Blue SN570 1TB NVMe (M.2 SSD).

Thinking about moving my home PC to run an Intel CPU and an RTX 4090 and swapping the old board and CPU into my current office PC and carrying over the faster RAM and 3090 into it.

I've not had an Intel CPU since the Pentium 3! I was an AMD guy and I had the same AMD Phenom II X6 1100T since 2010 all the way up to a whole new PC in 2018. I wasn't huge on PC gaming back then it was PS2, PS3 and PS4 all the way.

Is there a big difference between the K, F and KF versions? Anyone know a good bang-for-buck board to pair them with?

K is only worth it if you're overclocking (or you get it for the same price as a non-K)
F just means you need a dedicated GPU for the rig.

Not looked at boards lately so can't say, but I REALLY need to up mine as I'm still on a 4th Gen i7 Shocked

The thing that has came through recently on my home rig is that the 2700X is bottlenecking the 3060 Ti which I was surprised about as the 3060 Ti is only a smidge more powerful than the 2080 Ti that it replaced.

I know that AMD sockets support multiple generations but I think the best I can use with my current board would be the Ryzen 9 5950X but that's only like £100 less than just getting the latest Ryzen 9 7950X so there's no point taking the older CPU. However, getting the latest generation does mean a new board and if I am going to that expense I would rather pick the best gaming performance CPU and motherboard and that's currently going to Intel.

EDIT: Also I can't believe that my system is already 5 years old. When it was first bought it was the best of the best of the best you could have got. The Ryzen was king of the hill over Intel and the 2080 Ti was Nvidia's flagship GPU at the time. Now only 5 years later it's feeling leggy and tired. The office PC doesn't suffer as much, the only reason that was upgraded was because we use different software now that loads entire models into the graphics memory so we needed cards with a lot of it and didn't want to swallow the cost of Quadros when we didn't need the other features of the cards at all.

i skiped the 20 serise cards as they want worth it

holding off in the 4090 now due to power isues with em and melting plugs

you need at leats 16gig and that was always recomended you would not need more but thing are just starting to change id stick 32gig in

Fuck me, the autism is real.

AMD are behind Intel now. Again. For PCIE and DDR5 reasons though, AMD are better, but Intel is still the "better" chip at 7900X vs 13900K regions.

20 series were fine if you weren't on a 1080Ti.

30 series, for same reason as above, I didn't go to because I had a decent 2080 and no desire to buy the next gen, I always do a 2 gen step. The plugs are user error, not just melting for fun, and its all 12VHPWR connectors, not just the 4090.

OK the 16GB is correct, wouldn't go to 8 ever unless it was for a parents machine.

On topic though...

I left old gen DDR4 and got a new DDR5 AMD board, I went AMD for budget, rather than anything else.
7600X, 4080, 32GB 5600MHz, 850w PSU. I got everything for less than 2k and its running perfectly fine with a light push on voltage.

Its more than enough of an improvement from my old i9 and 2080S.

Move on from DDR4. Only go 2 sticks for speed reasons.

Pointless for you and those specs to get anything less than the latest gen. Sure a newer Ryzen might do you good, but whats the point in going from an old Ryzen to a still old Ryzen. The future is now old man.

So far I am thinking of:

NZXT N7 Z790 E-ATX motherboard (£299.99) paired with an Intel Core i9 13900K (£579.99).

The 13900K has a boost speed of 5.8 GHz but there is a 13900KS which has a boost speed of 6.0 GHz but it retails at £699.99. Since I am going to be water-cooling and overclocking it anyway, I guess they will both ultimately be comparable performance wise?

The case I am thinking of using is the Corsair 7000D Airflow case (£299.99) as it can fit a pre-made, case-specific EKWB distribution plate with integrated pump (£359.99).

I am looking through NZXT's QVL for RAM trying to locate the best 6,000 MHz memory with lowest latencies. With they reported the latency of the sets on the QVL but they don't. Rolling Eyes

I built a 'customer' a 13900K and it's been back and forth with RAM issues. He's down to 2 stick now and it's running fine, same as another colleague with their DDR5 intel rig. Go careful with going too high clock and try to keep to 2 sticks.

I use a 5000D and it's spacious.

Are you cooking the GPU too, if so, you'd need a decent pair of rads, I personally don't like distribution reservoirs and run a chunky D5 in the void area out back, into 2 360s. You'll need decent bits to keep a 40 series and a 13900K sensible temps.

Enjoy the build Mr. Green

Upgraded the CPU for 3 similar PCs recently. All had 32 GB RAM, 3060's and AMD 2600 CPUs. Now they all have the 5600x providing a significant leap in performance, kept cost down and had sufficient cores (gaming). This will be the last CPU upgrade on these AB350 boards though as socket compatibility has likely reached its end-point.

I was already aware that RAM can be a bit finnicky on the Raptor Lake CPUs. You can get some insanely fast RAM kits now with DDR5 but the specification sheets for the CPU and Motherboard heavily limit the supported speeds (CPU = 5,600 MT/s and Motherboard = 6,000 MT/s) so I am looking for something that is 6,000 MT/s with the tightest possible timings and only going for two DIMMs.

https://www.intel.co.uk/content/www/uk/en/products/sku/232167/intel-core-i913900ks-processor-36m-cache-up-to-6-00-ghz/specifications.html

https://nzxt.com/en-GB/product/n7-z790

I am going to overclock the CPU and GPU but it's not going to be very aggressive since I really want a quiet PC. Using the 7000D I was going to go for a slim 360mm radiator in the front and slim 360mm radiator on the top. I don't know if there will be enough space clearing the motherboard to get a little 120mm in the back or not, from pictures of the inside of the case it looks ultra tight (although the NZXT motherboard is quite slimline itself).

I was hoping that I would be able to re-use the six Corsair LL120 fans from my current build but it looks like I will need to get EKWB's Varder fans as the specifications speak for themselves:

EKWB Vardar EVO 120ER RGB Fan:

Maximum air flow = 77.00 CFM,
Static pressure = 30.99 Pa,
Noise level = 33.5 dBA.

Corsair LL120 RGB Fan:

Maximum air flow = 43.25 CFM,
Static pressure = 15.79 Pa,
Noise level = 24.8 dBA.

Just bear in mind if you have an imbalance between the intake and exhaust airflow rates it's better to have a bit of positive pressure inside the case otherwise dust builds up on a seam somewhere and looks unsightly Smile

I use SP120 fans as they were rated pretty much top for static pressure through a standard size radiator.

Just an update on what I have decided upon so far:

Case = Corsair 7000D Airflow - Black (£299.99 - Scan),
Case distro = EKWB Quantum Reflection² 7000D (£359.99 - Overclockers),
Motherboard = NZXT N7 Z790 - Black (£289.99 - Scan),
CPU = Intel Core i9 - 13900K (£569.99 - Overclockers),
CPU waterblock = EKWB Velocity2 D-RGB 1700 - Nickel + Acetal (£109.99 - Scan).

Going to buy everything above at the end of the month when I get paid.

Still deciding on RAM configuration and what card to watercool.

NZXT boards are wank.
Proper wanky type wank.

The case you have chosen is decent, however I am a bequiet! fanboi and the 500dx is awesome

Personally I like to go for max processing power at the lowest Watts which is usually one of the mid-range i5 processors. I run a rad even though it's OTT as the main fan can run super slow. On top of that I prefer heat tower style cases so you have convection as a backup on fan failure Smile

Since you and P both shit on the board, any particular reasons? I watched youtube reviews and they were positive. I've only ever used gigabyte boards before so I have no experience with other board manufacturers but the NZXT boards are made by ASRock and I thought ASRock, ASUS, Gigabyte and MSI were the big four in motherboards?

Gigabyte have always been solid for me. MSI not so much. I think I had an ASRock board years ago, seemed okay.

Genuinely I just want feedback if they're in the know on it. I have no problem swinging to another board manufacturer Laughing

Gigabyte are the main provider for me when it comes to reliability. I do have an ASUS board waiting for a customer but that's a really high end board and not worth it (he doesn't listen tho)

I'm a huge fan of the mid range gigabyte stuff. Going higher with the aorus (which is just a name and dreadful RGB option) is not worth it if you really don't want to brand whore.

NZXT previously worked with and modelled on the ECS board manufacturer, which aside from some decent changes (RAM speeds, vrm cooling etc) are still essentially a £50 board with a £250 price tag. I wouldn't overclock with one.

Going against the brand whore aorus, this is probably one of the nicer flexible boards for them right now.

Pretty much P. says, it's just not worth it.
Put the money you would spend on it towards something else.

FWIW, JayzTwoCents released an alright vid about the state of the mobo market right now, and he is pretty much on point with it.
