Hi All,

Im currently considering my options for moving up to an A licence in future. Currently on an A2 and really enjoying my current bike, but I’m milling over my best options for progressing to the A.

My thoughts were to go through a school again and pay for the bike hire etc (although expensive) but my last instructor said to just buy a bike that fits the category and turn up on it self booked. Would anyone do this option in my situation? Or is it a lot easier to take it on the chin and pay a school again Laughing

The biggest issue identified in the past is 'how do you get insured on a bike you don't have a license for?'

There is also the matter of how you legally get it to the test centre.

The only person I've ever known to get insurance on a bike they ain't licensed for is TonyNorton on here so @CarlW12 search and DM @TonyNorton.

That doesn't change the fact you can't legally get to the test centre though unless you have a mate with an A license ride you there as a pillion.

B&Q do hourly van hire, it's do-able.

I think I would have just stumped up the cash for a school to sort it all.

Yeah I am in this camp as well.

By time he gets an insurance policy for a couple hundred, spends a couple hundred on van hire and then minces around wasting time and having to prove blah blah blah to DVLA at the test centre it would have just been easier paying £750 for DAS, getting some lessons thrown in to try and iron out the bad habbits he has now and moved on.

I went from A1 to A using a bike school, just too much admin doing it the other way.

I personally think that after 2 years of riding on A2 then A entitlement should be given anyway, but that's another story.

Bikesure used to do insurance that would cover you for doing the test on your own bike but BCF doesn't know of anywhere that does it now.

Completely agree with you. I think the whole retesting system is a load of BS, but oh well, is what it is. Looks like going through the school seems the option with the least amount of headaches

There is nothing wrong with doing it yourself, and as mentioned, getting the bike there and back for Module 1 legally, and there for Module 2 legally plus the needed insurance can be done. If you can find a place to insure you these days.

However, Speaking as an instructor who has picked up an upgrade from a fellow who did try the above and failed module 1. Sadly he had his module 2 booked for the following day so could not take that either.

It can sometimes work out cheaper to use a training school in the long run. By the time you have paid the insurance, got the bike there and back etc. Especially when the instructors will knock out any bad habits you may have picked up since the last test.

For my 2 pennyworth I agree with those who say 'use a school'. It's just too much hassle and risk doing it the private way.

In addition to this schools often book out test dates in advance. So you may be able to get a test much sooner through them. It would be better if the whole process didn't cost the best part of a grand though!

To be honest I don't think it's that expensive. £750 for 5 days of an instructors time with test costs, bike use and insurance flung in for good measure too? Bargain.

If a lawyer charges you £200 an hour you wouldn't bat an eye but a driving instructor charges you £750 for 25+ hours suddenly people shit bricks Rolling Eyes

Affordability depends on situation but yes you are paying for a certain skillset and experience along with bike hire. I certainly couldn't have afforded it until my mid-20s.
