Okay, so I obviously missed a meeting. I hadn't realised air rifles had gone so far:

Once you get past how annoying Americans are the actual range, stability and consistency is pretty impressive!

p.s. a Whistle Pig is some sort of fat mountain gopher.

You'd need an FAC to own one of those in the UK though.

With a standard sub 12ft lb (no FAC required) an experienced shooter can hit a small target area with tight grouping consistently up to around 40m. There's actually a shooting competition type called HFT that does this. People mostly shoot .177 calibre pellets as they have an overall flatter trajectory and mostly use precharged pneumatic guns for this as they have very little recoil and kick (unlike springers).

Just like Islander said below, these are impossible to get in the UK without a Firearms Certificate, at which point you won't fucking get one because you'd get a .22LR Ruger 10/22 or a .22LR CMMG AR15 and be done with it.

Well no, for competition use the guys in the vid are arguing the air rifle might be superior. A +/- 3ft per second variance in velocity is nothing to be sniffed at plus zero recoil and noise. Of course this is for subsonic so probably better off with old skool gunpowder for extreme ranges.

Not sure if already mentioned, air rifle power drops off as they age. Unlike Bullet Guns which just get auld.

So springs and seals need maintenance. More than likely a task that could easily have a fekin eye oot or a finger off. Laughing

And the Fire Arms Certificate is an issue since the Fcuking Fat Bastirt murdered all those children and their teacher in Dunblane Primary school.

So sad.

Literally babies.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunblane_massacre?wprov=sfla1

That's why we can't have good things in UK.

If one can ignore the liberties some u-tyoob kreeaters take with plastering s4ite moozak over one's senses.

I've previously owned (got rid of it when Scotland made it illegal to own an air rifle without a Firearms Certificate) a Gunpower Stealth which is a pre-charged pneumatic in .22 and it definitely makes noise when you shoot it (and that's with the suppressor on). I've also owned a Ruger 10/22 and it's not much louder than the air rifle, I'd say the biggest contributor to the noise of the .22LR is actually the action cycling.

Regarding recoil, there's always recoil due to Newton's third law. The recoil on a .22LR is fuck all anyway, especially if it's a semi-auto where a lot of the recoil is dampened by the cycling of the action.

Recoil was the wrong word to use. It's the 'kick' that a powerful spring gives when going from fully compressed to expanded in an instant that gives a springer it's particular quirks and demands a very relaxed hold on the rifle to maintain accuracy.

True recoil is directly related to the momentum (mass x velocity) of the projectile. On an air rifle where the velocity and mass of the projectile (pellet) is low, recoil is negligible.

Well yes, I overstated my point but it did look like a magnitude of different in the video.

I rebuilt my BSA Mercury when it was 40 years old about 4 years ago. It hadn't fired in years and wouldn't.. The nylon(?) piston had expanded in the pressure chamber and was an absolute fucker to get out. The new one is aluminium I think. I was tempted to fit an extra strong spring but the dour warnings of prison if I exceeded the FAC power limit put me off!

Made the right call mate, even thought it's extremely unlikely to be caught, if you were and the police lab chrono-graphed it over 12 ft-lbs you'd be fucked. You'd be in possession of a Section 1 firearm without a license and that's a minimum of 12 months prison. You'd also be looking down the barrel of the more serious charge of manufacturing a firearm which is a very minimum of 3 years prison.

Gulp! ..in other news I recall a trick I was once showed involved putting a drop of propellant (ether/easy start IIRC) in the air chamber, which would sometimes ignite when the air was highly compressed (like a diesel engine I suppose). The result was an impressive 'crack' sound and a pellet that would burst through corrugated iron sheet...allegedly.

I too like an SMK, three of them in fact.
I have two QB78s converted to regulated HPA, one with a target stock and one with a thumb hole .177 and the other .22 respectively.
Also an XS19 break barrel. 22 springer to keep my hand in with more traditional shooting.
Also in the armoury are a pretty rare BAM B40 underlever .22 and last but not least is the stupidly accurate AirArms S410.

I likes me air rifles and I wouldn't mind a go on that FX in the vid but I get far more pleasure out of creating a tack driver out of a real cheap Chinese offering.
