Riding other bikes on insurance

Looking at renewal quotes for my scooty and can't seem to find any reference to riding other bikes
Is it not a thing any more?

It's not an every day thing but handy when I need to do a test ride or take a bike to MOT
I know the bike has to be insured by the owner but most of the ones
I work on are.

My own policy (Bennetts) includes that, but I've certainly come across others that don't

perhaps it's because I'm looking the cheapest quotes?

Just told Carol Nash to fuck off cos they didn't quote me happy
and will shop around a bit more.
I have until the end of the month to decide.

Even MCE had it when I was with them but that was a few years ago now.

I'd have to go look on my present policy with Hastings as I never really thought about it when I changed to them. Not that i'm likely to ride anyone elses bike anymore.

This is basically the same discussion we had over Feastys buying a bike and riding it on his current insurance for another bike isn't it?

Yes, the owners insurance has to cough up in cases of an accident but the rider isn't actually covered for himself so surely he is still breaking the law.

I would like to recant my post. I now acknowledge there is a difference to what the courts will insist on insurance paying out over and what you are legally obliged to have.

one point to note that I hadn't realised, but I think both mine and my wifes policy both state this in the small print, is that we are both covered 3rd party on other bikes if i recall correctly, but NOT a spouses bike

so even though we both have bikes, and our own policys for each one, with different companies, we cant actually ride each others bikes

Swintons does it, also.

I had cause to check mine (multibike) as recently as last week due to my recent Nun-Moped interface and it definitely said (even though I was only insured TPFT) I could ride other bikes provided the owners had the bike insured themselves.

Back in the day (20 years ago) bike insurance was for riding any bike and not for a specific bike third party.

I'm not aware of ever having had bike insurance (even when it was just TPFT) when I didn't have third party when riding someone elses bike.

Just to muddy the water.

I looked on the thebikeinsurer site for quotes and Hastings was the only company
that had the 'riding other bikes' box ticked.
Bennets who I was with previously and let me ride other bikes didn't have it ticked.
This may just be a wanky website building for all I know but doesn't help.
The bike insurer rang me seconds after I filled in the online form
to sell me shit.
When I asked about other bike cover on the quotes, they were clueless.

Got sick of trawling through the sites and info and just went with
Swinton for £59.65 Comprehensive no frills.
If it includes other bikes great, if not then sod it.
