Looking at renewal quotes for my scooty and can't seem to find any reference to riding other bikes
Is it not a thing any more?

It's not an every day thing but handy when I need to do a test ride or take a bike to MOT
I know the bike has to be insured by the owner but most of the ones
I work on are.

My own policy (Bennetts) includes that, but I've certainly come across others that don't

Hmm.. I do seem to recall I had that when I was with Bennets
perhaps it's because I'm looking the cheapest quotes?

Just told Carol Nash to fuck off cos they didn't quote me happy
and will shop around a bit more.
I have until the end of the month to decide.

Even MCE had it when I was with them but that was a few years ago now.

I'd have to go look on my present policy with Hastings as I never really thought about it when I changed to them. Not that i'm likely to ride anyone elses bike anymore.

Case law says that the owner's third party insurance has to cover anyway.

It depends and it isn't always obvious, in my experience.

I've always bought my insurance through the Go Meerkat comparison places - riding other bikes is not a feature I've ever needed use of, and I always go for whatever's the cheapest 'cos I is a tight-arse.

Last year's policy for the Honda ended up being through Hastings, who stated upfront that riding other bikes was included, which was confirmed when I checked the Certificate of Insurance.

But this year, when I took out a policy for the Triumph through Swinton, they stated that riding other bikes wouldn't be included, but the CoI actually states clearly that I am actually covered for this - so who knows?

Well aye, the owner's insurer will have to meet any third party damage and injury costs, but they would almost certainly cancel the policy and then take legal action to recover their costs from the owner.

And it's still an offence to ride or drive a vehicle without being insured yourself, and it is also an offence to cause or permit someone without insurance to ride or drive your vehicle without insurance...

Ahh Swinton was who quoted me the lowest.
I'll have to dig a bit deeper methinks.
It's not a vital issue but it can be useful at times.

You clearly don't understand case law. If case law says third party insurance applies, it applies.

The rest is contract law which is civil and I dare you to find a case where an insurance company has tried to recover it's losses under civil law from an individual.

All that is needed under law is third party insurance. It doesn't have to be yours.

The police will argue against that but they aren't actually the people who set the law.

This is basically the same discussion we had over Feastys buying a bike and riding it on his current insurance for another bike isn't it?

Yes, the owners insurance has to cough up in cases of an accident but the rider isn't actually covered for himself so surely he is still breaking the law.

Which case is being cited as case law?

I would like to recant my post. I now acknowledge there is a difference to what the courts will insist on insurance paying out over and what you are legally obliged to have.

I blame the excess alcohol last night....

one point to note that I hadn't realised, but I think both mine and my wifes policy both state this in the small print, is that we are both covered 3rd party on other bikes if i recall correctly, but NOT a spouses bike

so even though we both have bikes, and our own policys for each one, with different companies, we cant actually ride each others bikes

That's the same with my car cover. I have to be a named driver on her policy and she has to be a named driver on mine.

I'm purely guessing that it's something to do with that we will drive each others car/bike a lot more often being in the same household.

Swintons does it, also.

I had cause to check mine (multibike) as recently as last week due to my recent Nun-Moped interface and it definitely said (even though I was only insured TPFT) I could ride other bikes provided the owners had the bike insured themselves.

Back in the day (20 years ago) bike insurance was for riding any bike and not for a specific bike third party.

I'm not aware of ever having had bike insurance (even when it was just TPFT) when I didn't have third party when riding someone elses bike.

Yep, Norwich Union, basically the only people who insured bikes.

Specifically the "Norwich Union Rider Policy". I remember when they pulled that; IIRC existing policyholders were allowed to keep renewing, and would have been mad to let them lapse unnecessarily. ISTR it was a lot longer than 20 years ago though.

Just to muddy the water.

I looked on the thebikeinsurer site for quotes and Hastings was the only company
that had the 'riding other bikes' box ticked.
Bennets who I was with previously and let me ride other bikes didn't have it ticked.
This may just be a wanky website building for all I know but doesn't help.
The bike insurer rang me seconds after I filled in the online form
to sell me shit.
When I asked about other bike cover on the quotes, they were clueless.

Got sick of trawling through the sites and info and just went with
Swinton for £59.65 Comprehensive no frills.
If it includes other bikes great, if not then sod it.
