Construction site with tens of thousands of bolts (M30-M42 mostly). These are HRC type bolts so once they reach a set torque, the spline on one end shears off.

Our client wants to have some sort of image recognition system so during periodic inspections, someone can walk around with a camera and record the condition and position of all the bolts. If any of the nuts have rotated or some other issue, the system should identify this and notify the inspector. Not necessarily in real time but it can be processed later at an office.

I am envisaging a QR code next to each panel of bolts so in the video, it can easily identify the location.

I am sure this sort of tech exists nowadays but researching it is impossible. I get lost in rabbit holes of articles about AI or facial recognition which isn't what I want.

Anyone got a clue where to start? I know this doesn't seem like the best method but still gotta find something.

I've done excessive work in image detection, but mines specifically for skin tone and image processing via compute engine.

Problem you'll have with QR is if they are small/going to be dusty and look shit/wear easily/be tampered with... all that automation work goes in the bin.

Assuming physical stamping or similar is not possible?

There's QR codes and then there's industry codes. IIRC the whole QR code industry was born out of the coding stamped on the side of US freight carriages and that was some hokey shit way before the Internet was a thing.

tl;dr you pick the codes that work. If the environment is that bad you'd go with RFID tags or Dallas buttons.

As to the image recognition thing I can't help, I've only worked on recognising stock losses in warehouses via CCTV systems.

The QR code is just for identifying the location of the image/video. It can be anything that is unique for each panel of bolts.

I thought the hard part would be identifying the bolts and doing comparisons of the nut angle etc.

I don't even know where to begin with this stuff tbh.
