The utterly disguisting thing is we, a maritime nation, don't even have a sail training ship of our own. Even I was trained on a full rigged sail training ship but I never stood on any top masts. Laughing

That's Columbias naval flagship. Cudos to Columbia.

We have loads of sailing ships of that scale or are you specifically alluding to the Royal Navy?

I sailed on the Sir Winston Churchill (a training schooner if you're not familiar with it) as a part of a joint schools sailing training thing in the early 70s. Basically sailing round the coast of Scotland working with a professional crew. IIRC it was set up by the Duke of Edinburgh to give schoolboys an opportunity to learn the basics.

It was certainly different but immense fun. The Churchill was up here as part of the tallships race a few years ago and I managed to get on board for a look around. Smile She's not a training vessel any more and apparently has been in private ownership since 2000. Certainly a loss for school kids.

Sir Winson Churchill and the Malcolm Miller were schooners, not square riggers.

My first sailing ship was the Tectona,

https://sailtraininginternational.org/app/uploads/2016/12/vessel-tectona-5-800x530.jpg

My second was on the Italian training ship Amerigo Vespucci which is absolutly the most beautifil ship in the world.

https://cdn.mysailing.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/28132800/tall-ship2.jpg

I cannot find any full rigged ship under the red duster now so Easy-X, pleasy supplyt some links so I feel better.

I'm not up with the terminology, I just see "boat + sails" Sad

My boss's daughter is into sailing in a big way and trained on some big ship or other, I'll find out what it was. Probably similar to what Islander mentioned though.

<addendum> I think it's a valid point to keep old traditions alive. People out in the woods (especially Americans on YouTube) still take pride in starting a fire by rubbing two sticks together Smile

Glenlee is moored next to the museum of transport glasgow.

It was built on the Clyde as a cargo ship then spent time as a training ship with the Spanish navy before being left to rot somewhere.
An ex BN architect saw her when he was on holiday in Spain and began the process of reclaiming her. (I think he was on holiday there.)
She was made watertight and towed back to the UK to begin restoration.
All the masts and yards had been cut into peices for scrap.
They were returned to the ship by the Spanish after they learned she was to be rebuilt.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glenlee_%28ship%29?wprov=sfla1

Quite a quiet legend sitting on the Clyde.
I spent more time on that ship than I could spend in the museum.

Criticism:
The museum of transport glasgow is mostly ruined by some aff her heid Iranian/iraqi woman architect.
I don't know if her idea or some prick at the museum but all the cars I wentnto look at are mounted up on a wall.
May as well just look at a photo of the wall.
Idiotic.

Never can understand the Scotch penchant for foreign architects.

It would be a waste of government money for the Navy to maintain and train on one of them because it has no place in a modern conflict.

With all due respect, Nobby, you need to re-examine your value system.

Around the time of the Malcolm Miller and Winston Churchill there was another ship that was used for young adults I believe but cannot for the life of me remember it's name. A brig if I remember right. I will have to e-mail one of my old Captains who is the font of knowledge on all things sail.

As thats the sort of thing I do for a living and I have to follow the policy of the government on what is considered value for money, no I don't.

If people want to do shit like that with private money, good for them.

I aye believed they used long retired vessels as trainers as they are no longer part of a strategic force.
The training is to generate team work, leadership, understanding some seamanship responsibilities and on an interesting vessel.

And for when one runs out of Diesel oil in the Bay of Biscay, one can, at least, lash bedlinen into a sail and tack one's path back to blighty.

Winston Churchill, as far as i know is a private boat and pretty much history.

The Sir Winston Churchill has been in private hands since 2000 and was refitted as a charter vessel. It did berth in Stromness during the tallships race in 2011 and that was when I had the chance to go aboard for a looksee. It was hugely different below decks but the deck level all looked pretty much as I remembered them.

I went aboard a few of the bigger square rigged ships as well, they're utterly magnificent. Smile

We get regular visits from the Staatsrad Lehmkuhl which usually stops over in Kirkwall and is often open for visits from interested locals. This is the Norwegian's training ship used by both students and naval trainees and is utterly beautiful.

A few photos from the 2011 tallship race (it was really hazy unfortunately), these were taken from Hoxa head as they came into Scapa Flow.

In the words of the Reese-Mogg thing, if I disagreed with governmenmt policy I should resign rather than refusing to apply it.

Perhaps I'm being naïve but why is this an issue?

Sailing ships in the Navy became outdated well over 150 years ago, I'd be quite annoyed if our military were wasting their time training on such outdated tech.

The Royal Navy is, quite rightly, considered one of the most highly trained navies in the world - a list Columbia does not feature on. Perhaps if the Columbians stopped faffing around on tall ships they might improve their standings?

Yep, they smack of being vanity projects with no real use.

Any teambuilding, training, morale, leadship and seamanship needs can be dealt with quicker, cheaper and be more relevant to actual duties without faffing with something like that.

What is the relevance of being able to climb to the top of that mast for someone who is going to be spending 6 months of the year at the bottom of the ocean somewhere in a boomer?

I'll dig Nietzsche up and let him know that we've not only killed God but the human spirit of adventure too. What a miserable existence to run everything "by the numbers" Sad

Like I say, the spirit of adventure is a thing for private money and not defence expenditure.
