The tech flaw that lets hackers control surveillance cameras

Typical journalistic F.U.D. article. "Hackers could be watching you right now!!!" Rolling Eyes Missing from the article are a couple of vital details: low quality Chinese IP Cameras and connected directly to the Internet.

In CCTV there are typically two types of cameras: old skool video cameras that send a video signal to a recording box and the newer IP cameras. The former aren't even network devices so one would have to be on site to cut into the video feed. The latter capture the video signal internally and turn it into a Netflix-style stream of digital data. Again one would normally stream this straight to an internal server. A decade ago when IP cameras came out you'd have to be an utter moron to expose them directly to the Internet.

Umm... so how would you look at your cameras if you were out of the office? Stick it behind a VPN which is what any serious organisation would do anyway which the BBC neglect to mention for the sake of "quality journalism" although I have sympathy for the everyday consumer that might not be aware of such security considerations.

Quote:
Panorama could not run the camera on a BBC network for security reasons - so it was put on a test network where there is no firewall and little protection.

Like standing on a street corner waving a £50 note in the air ffs.

tl;dr hackers getting hold of CCTV cameras would be the least of your worries if an organisation is allowing public access to all its internal infrastructure.

There’s also Eufy, who completed lied and tried to cover it when it was discovered their “local only” cameras could be streamed from anywhere by pretty much anyone with 5 minutes to spare…

Exactly, this has been an issue for quite a while. "You want to see your home camera from anywhere in the world? Well what did you expect?!"

If anything CCTV cameras are easier to trap behind a firewall than consumer stuff.

That's pretty old stuff. I get the same e-mail about once a month (if I bother to check my spam folder.) Basically your email address is in a batch of compromised accounts e.g. lifted from an online shopping site that's been hacked.

Nothing to worry about unless you reuse the same password for everything. Nobody's daft enough to do that anymore... are they? Shocked

Maybe it's time for a re-name of these devices then?

It would appear "Closed Circuit" does not really apply to most of them.

I usually respond with 'The whole point of me getting sexy on the internet is that you give me money to watch and not vice versa. Thats why I'm on onlyfans.'
