Is it just me, but after several years of dealing with car insurance I realised that the voluntary amount makes very little difference to the monthly/annual cost.
So for the past few years I just put £0 voluntary excess - we get stung by the forced excess enough as it is anyway!

I noticed when doing my girlfriends car insurance after she passed her test that it made a noticeable difference when it was higher but for me with 7 years driving it doesn't make any difference so I think it's only really a thing for new drivers. Also if you buy through GoCompare and you can claim £250 excess back from them if you have a crash.

I've noticed that sometimes it literally makes no difference whatsoever... having chosen my preferred quote I always try tweaking the voluntary excess to see the effect.

Similar applies to estimated mileage covered, actually.

Had this discussion with an insurance broker over the phone when I insured my Tracer. Apparently there are thresholds where the algo does spew out a difference. Upto 7999 miles was significantly cheaper than upto 8999 miles.

I tweak the excess too and had to settle for 700 total - voluntary+involuntary. Not ideal.
