Why do sellers cover up their number plate when selling?
Just curious.. lol.

Buyers obviously wanna check the details online to make sure its not stolen etc.

It's nothing paranoid. It's part of the whole identity theft/misuse thing.

Probably.. ebay is an easy place to look up a particular model for cloning.. saves pacing around a car park and you can pick one from the other end of the country.

If someone messages you and asks for your number plate so they can do a HPI check at least there's an audit trail if your plate did get cloned.

Daughter bought a car from Gumtree. 3 weeks later gets a parking PCN from Hackney Council. Pic showed same model and colour car as hers but 4 door instead of 2 door.

So it's not paranoia, just common sense.

I only cover up the plate on my bike if I have to make good progress. Cool

Here's a story.

Many years ago there used to be a 16 year old lad on this very forum. He was relatively normal and wrote reasonably well so he ended up fitting in as well as a 16 year old could with a bunch of by that time 30 somethings.

Then... one day it went a bit wrong. He admitted trawling Biketrader for an FZ750 the same year and colour as his Dad's FZ, having a plate made up from the reg on the BikeTrader bike, and then putting that reg on his Dad's bike to illegally ride it and avoid getting pinged by ANPR for no tax or insurance or MOT.

Since then I NEVER give away the full reg on an advert. Ever.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

If you're selling what doe's it matter if it gets cloned it won't be your problem once you've sold it

Assuming it's sold quick... What happens if it's cloned and you don't get rid of it for another 6 months?
