Does anyone know what the CG125E engine is from (obviously from a CG but which era specifically?) and if it is supposed to be 4 speed engine as i only seem to be getting 4 gears (1 down 3 up)

Thanks

***Edit: Engine is a CG125E not a CG125BRE

I could have sworn that the one I passed my test on (1992) was 1 down 4 up....

yeah...
theres two real options...the one you describe, which was the 5 spd.
and then a much older 4 down only version.

if OP has a 1d3u thing between his legs, it cant be a 4spd and must be a broken 5spd...or some chinese weird 4spd gearbox has landed up in there. (they make copies of the things with 4 spd in some countries still)..

so if sprocket cover says 1n234....well...
or if it says 1n2345...etc...
(or...its from a bitsa bike and who knows really)

It has a CDI

Sorry guys the plot thickens... the engine in the log book is a CG125BRE but the actual engine inside it is a CG125E motor and it is a 5 speed i didn't have the wheel off the floor before so it wouldn't go into 5th. its 1 down 4 up.

All would be fine but i *think* this is a 6 volt motor... and the wiring loom has been hacked about so i think someone has put a 6 volt motor in for god knows what reason and then hacked together a wiring loom.

I have purchased a brand new loom but i had no idea this engine was in a 6 volt bike... Really messed up all of this is.

This is the engine if anyone knows for sure what era engine it is?

As I roughly recall
CG125s went from 6v to 12v electrics 1985 ish and points to CDI around 1990.
Electric starters were added 2000 ish

I'll guess it's an early 90s model

But, Chines clones may be newer in age but have older more basic
kit fitted

I'd have the stator cover off and check what's fitted inside.
you don't want to find points setup but a stator with both charge and source coils.
If you do, modding the wiring to a 12V system with AC CDI is easy enough and cheap to get after market bits and bobs to make it go.
A GY6 AC-CDI box and 12v RR will probably cost around £25

Is that two mild steel bolts on the header and Philips/Pozi headed screws on the case?
nasty cheap shit way of doing it that is

I had an XL125S for a while. It had a Japanese made 6v 5 speed CG125 motor in it too. Though should have had 6 speed overhead cam engine. I would have been happy with it if it wasn't for that missing gear.

Yours similar to this one?
