No surprise that people are trying to make political capital out of the tragedy. The most overt is drone footage of all the untouched houses of the elites vs. the literally burnt to the ground ashes of the poors. "The rich just want the islands all to themselves!" Kewl story, bro, but where are all the maids, cooks and gardeners gonna live now?

However I did see some footage a guy shot of the aftermath and TBH I wasn't paying attention till the commentary turned to "...and my wife has nothing to do with this. I've given the rest of the footage to a friend who lives far away in an undisclosed location. They also have all my social media passwords in case anything happens to me..." what an odd thing to say! Good way to farm clicks though Smile

I find the vitriol against tourists quite unacceptable. Up till this point tourists are the life blood of the island, but now they are scum for wanting to finish their holidays.

If I spent a few grand I'd want to finish my holiday.

Apparently the Maui government are doing a big land grab of all the damaged, burnt properties. They aren't allowing the land owners to sell to outsiders who will give them a good price, but will leave it until the local government can get the properties for cents on the dollar instead of the premium rates that could be got now. I suspect some shenanigans are afoot.

I've seen a few pieces on that. So far though no mention of scale Thinking Finding one poor pleb in any tragedy getting fucked over is dead easy but then to construct a full on evil cat stroking genius narrative...

For example, Farage bleating about losing his Coutts account (and it was bleating 'cos really, is there any chance of him starving to death over it) and of course he was going to claim some political capital out of it, gather some Coutts/Natwest scalps. However the "let me know if you've been de-banked" revealed the scale of the issue so at least we got something more than just Niggle looking smug.

Anyhoo, from what I can tell the island authorities are worried about a land grab. TBF if you're staring at an empty, burnt-out lot it would be sorely tempting to just go "fuck this shit" and sell it for what you can get rather than look at the long term potential value. This is a showcase for the real difference between the classes in society: resilience to trauma.

Poor working class? Lucky to have a house, can't afford insurance, fucked in a crisis. Middle class? Bought insurance, prepares to battle for a payout, at least will be partially compensated for losses. Upper class? Has a man to sort it all out, no loss in time or money. Elite? Rings the mayor to make sure the emergency services are camped outside the house from Day 1 Wink

It seems like a noble intent to "protect" the poorer residents but market interference rarely turns out the way it's intended/presented.

It will be the usual woke-wanks stiring the shite for agenda gain.

Keep the tourists away.
Fuck them.

See how they like just their own locals patronage of their hotels, restaurants and bars.

The story is the new aristocracy would prefer if all the riff-raff were cleared out so when they attend their favourite restaurant there's no possibility of rubbing shoulders with the hoi polloi. Fuck knows where they think the chefs and waiting staff will live.
