I've got an old laptop I finally decided to update to Windows 10. It's hitting 100% load and max temps on the desktop after start-up.

I stuck my old Windows 7 drive back in and the temps are fine/no high loads.

Any ideas as to what's going on?

What does it say in the task manager?
Is it installing updates in the back ground?

Might be worth re-doing the thermal compound under the heat sink and cleaning out the fans etc.

Sounds a bit arthritic to be running Windows 10. Unless you have a specific need such hardware does much better with a Linux desktop.

Not sure but it's a new install so probably. I re-applied thermal paste and cleaned out the fans as I upgraded the CPU, but it was doing the same thing with the old CPU (max load/high temps), and the new CPU seems to run cooler under Win' 7 at least.

Windows 10 has the same requirements as 7 but I always assumed that was BS? I wanna stick with Windows.

Try this
https://www.partitionwizard.com/partitionmanager/tiny10-iso-download-install.html

If its a new install it will be do so much shit in the background.
Windows search / indexing is a bastard.

Along with all the data collection M$ have going on.

My advice, leave it running over night to auto update etc.

Of course it'd be fine. Windows 10 just runs that little bit better with at least 8GB of RAM, a fast SSD, an i3 or better but apart from that...

If it's "I want Windows because of a specific Windows-only program" then fair enough but if it's just for web surfing, email and writing the occasional letter something like elementary OS would do.

I've tried Tiny11 on a handheld before, I wasn't that impressed with it although I was trying to get RAM usage down, so maybe it would help in this situation.

That's the thing, I don't feel like I can trust it when it randomly wants to hit Tjunction.

4GB DDR 2 (don't judge me...) SO-DIMMs seem to be pretty rare and expensive. It's got 3GB currently, I thought about upgrading to 4GB but the 64-bit system requirements are a GB higher, so would I see that much of a performance increase?

It's definitely better with the new CPU (2.0Ghz > 2.8Ghz), I grabbed the CPU from the highest spec' version of this laptop I saw, £6 off aliexpress Smile
