XL bullys are set to be banned by the end of the year so sayeth Rishi Sunak.

There are obviously people saying there are no bad dogs only, bad owners. I'm not sure I agree with that, there definitely seems to be something in these large bully breeds that makes them prone to attacking people.

Of course all the XL bully owners are all like "awe he's just an 80kg snuggle monster, he loves children and wouldn't hurt a fly"

It would be interesting to see what age all these dogs that have attacked people are and when the owners got them and what experience they had with dogs before hand, to see whether it is a result of poor ownership or some side effect of poor socializing or whether they are just prone to random aggression

Either way I'm not sure a knee jerk ban is going to fix it

Search the internet for 'Killer Kimbo' and Bully XL.

That will give you all the info you need on cause.

They are commonly used as currency in drug deals. So you can imagine the degree of training and socialisation they receive.

Here's a website set up by concerned citizens compliling recent attacks.

https://bullywatch.link/

I think a good way to think about it is that they are a dangerous weapon that needs to be taken out of the hands of idiots and well meaning people who have no idea how to handle it.

Hi, you said in the other thread that your brother banned XL Bully dogs from his practice. What was the reason?

A combination of staff safety and multiple piss taking owners wanting emergency caesarians then not paying for them. He also doesn't want to be complicit in the breeding of more of them. To elaborate as his policy is more nuanced than I initially made out, he will register them as peoples pets but only if they are neutered, if they hit 18 months old and are still entire, they are given notice to either book them in for neutering or find another vets.

For the same reason he will often refuse to register commercial breeders of other dogs with severe welfare and reproductive issues like british bulldogs, he'll look after peoples pets but wont participate in the breeding of them. Particularly if they are incapable of giving birth naturally.

They are of course free to find a different vet.

Genetics are to blame.

Boarder Collies are bred for herding which they do instinctively.

Gun dogs are bred for flushing game out of undergrowth and retrieving game which they do instinctively.

If you take a breed which is bred for for their size and strength as fighting dogs, what behaviour do you think they'll display instinctively?

I think that is correct Ste. I've had a few problems with my Old English bulldog. I got a dog trainer who politely said that he is a bulldog not a labradour so will never act like one.

He is very rude to other dogs, to say the least. Loves humans.

100% I was watching a video of a baby beaver that had been rescued by an animal rescue centre. It had never lived
anywhere near a river in its short life but once inside the centre it's first instinct was to gather things to make a 'dam'
across the doorways. It just did it, had never been shown and there was no water there to slow down, it just knew.
Same reason Pointers point, you don't have to train them to do it, it's built in.

Morally I would agree with that but if vets and other professions are privileged by law then they should do their job.
It would also stop them from being used politically like the recent case of
Jordan Peterson or the odd time when a solicitor starts pointing out when courts are behaving badly and gets threatened with being booted out of their profession.

You could make a very good argument for saying he IS doing his job by refusing to participate in the breeding of dogs which experience genetic welfare and behavioural problems.

We also have the dictionary definition of "job" which I believe is something along the lines of doing work then getting paid for it. A disproportionate number of bully owners seem to consider the second part of that optional.

As a vet we are obliged to provide emergency treatment to prevent suffering. if someone is not registered with a vet then we can't refuse to see them if it is a genuine emergency. The legal responsability does stop at emergency treatment to prevent suffering though. So if a bitch is stuck whelping and the owner doesn't have a vet, then of course, we would do a caesarian. However, it is also not unreasonable to expect to be paid to do it and if the owner is not prepared to pay for it, then the emergency treatment to prevent unecessary suffering may be -and sometimes is- euthanasia.

That case I'm afraid is 100% on the owner as far as I'm concerned. People have done it more than once at our practice in the last couple of years. Left an unpaid vet bill for £1500 for doing a caesarian on their XL bully and I know for a fact they sold the pups for £3k each. Both of those owners have now been told they will be refused treatment if they call us again, even in an emergency (they are given a 14 day notice period to find another vet). Is that unreasonable?

Obvious police sting is obvious.

Even if it isn't, read all the chips, put them on the list as self-identifying as XL bully. Fine any with no chips.

They'll just find a different breed to stand outside the shops with.

Probably Rotties.

You could kill someone with one of these:

https://www.recoilweb.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/Glock-43-Glock-Smyrna-GA-2.jpg

But everyone really wants...

https://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2014/01/30/video-undefined-1B145CBE00000578-738_636x358.jpg

...and hopefully never fire a shot!

That being said how do things turn out when a mini-gun goes off accidently?

They should ban motorcycles while they're at it.

Motorcycles are dangerous.

Another one today, or, another dog attack so lets say it was a bully?

A man was rushed to hospital on Friday evening after being attacked by a dog, believed to be an American bully XL, in a south London park.

Next thing will be XL Bully ate my cat. Might as well blame them for global warming, the demise of ICE and for stiching Nicola Sturgeon up.

My Bully Winston, Old English variety and his brother Marvin the Chuahau. Both a complete pain in the arse.

My Chihauha is as laid back as you can get, he literally can't be bothered to ever go a walk. It's actually my wife's dog but she died so I'm lumbered with the poor excuse for a dog.
