No customs charge for helmets

Today I found out that there is no customs charge for importing motorcycle or bicycle helmets from Europe. It came after a customs bill from DHL for £55, which I paid none the wiser. Then I checked for some strange reason, I wouldn't normally have.

Anyway getting the cash back from DHL.

Correct. Helmets are safety equipment and zero-rated for VAT. same as steel toecap boots from Screwfix Wink
Someone at DHL incorrectly blanket charged import VAT (no duty as we pay duty on practically nothing from EU - cos deal)

If its CE then it should be vat free.

But I bet the guvermints don't see it that way.
