"We call on the Government to scrap VAT on life-saving air vests which are currently subject to 20% VAT rate. Other lifesaving equipment, like helmets, are either zero or lower rated. Motorcyclists have one of the highest fatality rates per passenger mile of any road user, and with many good quality air vests costing in excess of £400, we believe making these cheaper by scrapping VAT will save many lives and prevent serious injuries."

Well, I'll sign it but you know the government doesn't care?

If you die it just opens a job up and reduces unemployment and means that you're not going to tie up any NHS resources in your old age. Good for statistics, good for votes and votes are what matter to them - just votes

Sounds like an advert for the jab.

I don't honestly think it would make an iota of difference. People who buy air bag jackets will buy them whether or not there is 20% VAT on them. People who don't, won't even if they are a bit cheaper.

I've always fancied having one of these air bag jackets just to be able to set it off as a joke at inappropriate times, like when I'm packed tightly inside a tube train or mid-routine at ballroom dance class.

So ... these "air vests" ... never heard of them before.
Do you blow them up before you get on the bike - like a life vest in the water - or do they do the Airbag Thing when you land on the deck?

Airbag vests have been around for a while. They tend to use compressed CO2 to expand when an accident occurs.

There are two main types. Lanyard and electronic. The lanyard ones tie to the bike and when you separate from the bike the lanyard triggers the airbag over a certain pull strength. You can't set it off accidentally unless you REALLY try. The downside to this is that I can see certain accidents where you stay with the bike and could get injured because the vest did not trigger. They generally seem to work well though I think.

The electronic ones have a 'brain' where you need to subscribe to the software. It has accelerometers etc that trigger the airbag when it detects there has been a crash. These are theoretically better in a crash but you need to pay £12 a month for the inMotion ones. The InMotion ones and the lanyard ones can generally be reset a few times by the user.

Alpinestars and Dianese make their own, but the airbags have to be sent back to Italy to be reset. I'm not sure whether you need to subscribe to them or not, but they'll be a fortune to buy in the first place.

You can't just fit an airbag vest under any protective jacket or leathers, they need to have space for the airbag to expand so you either get a vest that goes over protective clothing, or is designed in to the clothing from the outset. Some say you can use an inner vest as long as your jacket is large enough to take it when expanded but a leather jacket probably wouldn't work with that.

I wanted an airbag suit for trackdays but the subscription put me off because I'd be paying £12 a month for many months where I don't ride on track.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

Eloquently described by MarJay.... the one I use personally is a Helite Turtle. It's like a waistcoat I wear over my normal jacket (be that a winter waterproof job or my summer mesh one) and is tethered to the bike by a lanyard.

For what it's worth, I've worn it for about 6 years now (the full length of time I've been a born-again-biker) and it's gone off precisely once during that time, when I had my one crash to date (a fairly spectacular overcooking of a bend, somersaulting over the bars, apparently - I have no memory of it). Only permanent damage was a bust collarbone, but the paramedics surmised from the damage to my helmet and jacket shoulder that without the air vest (which bridged the gap between my shoulders and base of my helmet) I'd have broken my neck. So I'm a fan of these things.

Yeah well, see HK's response - but apart from all that; personally I have a far bigger fear of ending up potatoed rather than being deaded. Without my own vest (which let's face it, doesn't impinge on my riding enjoyment one jot) I could well have been typing out my BCF posts for the past 5 years using my eyelid. The thought doesn't appeal.

Ideally though they would prefer you die the day you retire as that's when you stop being a peak contributor to the economy and then become a burden on the state.

They want you to be a bag of meat that is productive and gives them money, when you lose your value as a productive bag of meat, that's when they want you to fuck off and die.

The lifeforms that weren't terminated pre-natal are more of a worry.
