This rear mudguard is killing me. Just tried to fit the luggage rack and to set the tail light low enough so it clears, it would be pointing at the ground.

I had another go at finding one and found a Turkish shop which lists all manner of oddball Eastern block motorcycle parts. Including a fair few Minsk parts.

I'm 95% sure it isn't a scam. It seems like a lot of effort to go to to photograph and individually (and correctly) list a selection of really specific parts from such an oddball motorbike for a scam site. The one thing that's making me a little suspicious is the parts are almost unbelievably cheap.

Anyway, they are only going to be paid by credit card if/when they get back to me with a shipping estimate.

The fun thing is, they had a minimum order of 50 euros and I was actually starting to run out of parts I either need or think might break by the time I got to that. Stuff like a headlamp reflector, fork stanchions, clutch plates, lever assemblies etc.

Reading between the lines, I think they are sitting on a big warehouse full of old stock motorcycle parts and are trying to punt them. Even if it costs as much again for shipping and I get humped for duty, it'll still be super cheap.

Upshot. Panel beating on hold for now. It'll run as-is with the current mudguard and I can mount the flashers elsewhere. I'll just paint the rear with primer for now in anticipation of getting a proper one, They unfortunately didn't have a set of rims for it.

Exhuast. It is actually a proper expansion chamber, there's a double cone in there and a "swirler" element with a stinger/baffle behind it. No packing. They also get HEAVILY clagged with coke/sludge because it runs on such a high 2t mixture. As I recall, the user manual did actually recommend pouring petrol over it and setting it on fire on a regular basis.

This got the worst of the residue off, then I hit it with the MAPP torch which got hot enough to light the carbon and burn it all off. The rear cone had come off the baffle so it needed welding back on. I haven't included the after picture because I'm not proud of the welding job, it is however firmly attached.

With regard to painting. If I'm getting a proper mudguard, it'll need painting blue when it arrives. The tank and toolbox covers all need rubbing down and more coats of blue too. Rather than do it now and be rushing to get paint on for the MOT etc. There's enough paint on the tank to be going on with. I can primer the existing mudguards then nothing's going to rust and the primer is very easy to blow on. I'll re-visit the topcoat when I have more time and when it's warmer, it took about a fortnight to harden last time.

So tank and fuel tap on.

All going well, I should be taking this for a test ride next weekend, make sure it runs properly and gets all the gears.

Looking good, thats a nice blue on the tank. How many miles is the dragon for you? will you be throwing a head gasket away by the time you get there?

I'm going to trailer/van it down the M6 because sod that for a game, 40mph on a freshly rebuilt 2-stroke lacks much appeal. So around 80 miles from the end of the motorway to the control point.

yeah I cant imagine it'd be fun on the motorway and no doubt the 'avoiding motorways' route would take you about a day in itself.

Are you doing the BP as well this year?

That's the plan. Tony's coming too, not sure what bike he's on.

I could yet be on the trials bullet, I still haven't had this running so there's every chance I've done something fuckwitted in assembling it because it was mostly guesswork and there's not really time to do anything about it if I have.

Aye, that's the one. It's a handy set-off point for the Dragon.

The mainstand is a meaty chunk of alloy and attached to the spare frame. The pivot pin was having none of it.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/ABLVV86xOl7JHKRSbnsreDjge71bMftkBBBAndnvTXICCHt4dcII7GfGU9FJDjRlubwoCSZX48SXSsmrwmdaCI6edpj6Aow0AaEqDvfzEj_Vk9ovrER9ikuvmY8hI1nf_RsezzNovotiBf-pmqz0nuo6qljR=w1547-h870-s-no

Then I noticed this little hole. Looksd like it's for a crosspin.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/ABLVV85IHaO1NOafYwoZjKFpyA0WBeWJmJ_S_rykli-XdBb-_5xnjmMwbM5aFYl86mZ8Nm_uw_qpxfP74-1AkvoRHs5foJRNEgfPXKAgp1xmepJOnQxinl0dAerr0_mBcrt_w4e5bsg4jnEpXXqX_Tf328h3=w1547-h870-s-no

Looks like it's supposed to pivot round the alloy stand with the pivot pin stationary, at some point it's seized and they forced it down anyway which sheared off the crosspin. This allowed the pivot pin to rotate but there was enough of a stub for it to hang up on preventing removal. It actually tapped out quite readily once I found where it was located, then the pivot started to move witha bit of heat and a drift.

All cleaned up, lashings and lashings of moly grease and I used a splitpin to crosspin it on the basis it will be easy to tap/drill out if it shears again,

I wanted a paper fuel filter but it looks likethere isn't really room for one. One of those little rectangular mesh filters on order, they don't need a lot of fuel flow anyway.

Exhaust gasket arrived so exhaust fitted with plenty of ceramic anti-seize on the collar. I also fitted one of the spare toolbox covers, the "good" ones are partially primed and sanded.

Also drilled and fitted the numberplate. Really just waiting on that inlet manifold arriving now.

Ah im not sure Ive actually met Tony, although I do remember him from early days on t'other place.

That mainstand is a hell of a casting, almost looks too modern, I was expecting some badly bent and brazed pipe made out of spare handlebar offcuts Laughing

In Soviet Russia, bike stands you.

I think it's a Mk 1 universal soviet motorcycle mainstand made by the glorious labour of the people. Special factory, many industrious workers toiling for the good of the motherland. They are used on quite a few different bikes. Provision for an extra spring for those who don't have a little spring clip to hold it in the up position like I do.

Same factory presumably does a good line in footpegs which use compression of the footpeg rubber as a spring to latch it in the up or down position as it cams over the bracket. Had the exact same ones on my Jawa.

The engineering is actually pretty good on it. The machining is may better than the stuff on my Enfields, all the holes line up and things fit where they are supposed to. The design is pretty well thought out, you can see why they did things they way they did although it's often for reasons of economy or reliability rather than performance. Like the swirler in the exhaust because they had sheet metal but no packing. What lets it down is some of the materials, particularly nuts, bolts and bearings.

My inlet manifold finally arrived today!

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/ABLVV86Jlk3MUM7kNwLv6C2ESbBMi6CVW7_BFnJU2mkDj7SGI2sA6P4iA8MfD8jT13kSZOkTxKX_J-L1Xv1UvZUVPla02hgA-q8rn1Vjv7EMYsycgz6bzsNqQ1ftQAJLqHkzGPJWTwQ6R0N4VimpOW-tQkBX=w392-h870-s-no

As you can see, it's had a hard paper round. I give it a damned good clean in the ultrasonic then I rubbed it down with wire-wool and refaced the gasket surfaces with wet and dry on a sheet of glass. Not perfect but perfectly good.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/ABLVV84gvCRNQ0jnJo3iNul4NxfghhU1cg2hwc5bs4ECRuRr0Jgmgokhqru2wVMF_ZMDOwil4TH2S0qCGTuMcKSGKbRXitdAwoRvy4PP63dfIwIUElaVUP9DgKgPf1MxrGNBauLwBNJ5nQettweFChlZVjcn=w1547-h870-s-no

I had to make a new o-ring for the carb by cutting up two smaller ones and superglue-ing them together. This isn't as much of a bodge as it sounds, it's used in industry to make o-rings in oddball sizes. I got a silicone reducer hose on Amazon to replace the badly perished airbox rubber. That nearest nut was a sod to get on, very tight in there. Blue castor 2t oil.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/ABLVV85AXgoeDdVnDvKz6XUI6XTJ92rsRWPzuAznEKunEH_JFLpN7cCCgYAq_UJe5XgAjwm_lMvUd8XfJB_9CXkXK1rjwoVfbUoJCnCOya1MU23DmkJCnZ7vMWGOpFvDm4FRXjKCkxH8bMlDrEEInyWtTnyB=w1547-h870-s-no

Also fitted the mudguards, resplendant in slapped-on primer.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/ABLVV85g6RvLBEyRRH3kXrZM3zuZmeBbFIdoJa1vJeO9jJfu648VOO7dhFMIg5BbF98Ec5Vox-7oQHK7_FNdROK26mt93HyqcNBjAegqfrM3K28a3brS3jk67cSs2xOf50v79sc2p2fkzqMeyQbCDOeGs8B1=w1547-h870-s-no

Then nothing for it but to see if it will start and run.

https://youtu.be/SmNMlaFHoJ4?si=xjqr7X9u7kfWt-qV

Yes it does. Engine sounds great. I'll admit to having a sinking feeling when it died at the end of that video but it was only going onto reserve. Turns out reserve holds a smidge under 5 litres which is what I put in it.

There is an issue with the lighting flickering. It's odd because the flicker disappears if you put more load in the circuit by either fitting an incandescant bulb in the tail light or sounding the horn. I'll get that worked out though.

I had a VERY brief test ride up the private estate road next door. It pulls, selects 1st and 2nd and the brakes work. There was a horrible whining noise as you pull away in gear though. A bit like a bad bearing.

I established it only does it with the bike in gear so it's not clutch or primary drive. It does it equally in first and second so it's not final drive but it does increase with revs. It also does it while stationary and is worse as you start to let the clutch out. This means it's not the mainshaft which wont be turning at a standstill.

That leaves the layshaft, which if I understand things correctly, is the only bit of the gearbox that's rotating on a bearing while in gear but stationary that wasn't already rotating while in neutral. I gave it a good looking at and I think it might be coming from the right hand layshaft bearing. The smaller of these two which are sweated into the gearbox outer cover. The reason I think that is because there bearings don't seat against a circlip. I fitted them by fitting them flush against an alloy block.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/ABLVV85gf_zBgQfejLluVwoAMn2-VDiqV_htZb0GlzhNEOGPXXmtx8_w9ii7LD7QK5ZYSE-0SEtdf3R7yNZdVEqKBXOzoJGKG8o0Y3v0s_1OU4ILRjDTTKYeBXslkoj2vK9NwBUYAHQTYPy3g0vzB-DvECau=w1547-h870-s-no

There's a steel insert that sits on top of the layshaft bearing.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/ABLVV877fxlDZUsesbu2ZdHb5_gh9BC7pndlBzA5l41g8OaZEIx211bPyMpbV51PhoG0rdcT2PpKctjDxIZF6uNM8WOkc3yMlikwju0vsO4ZU9BtvEgqLS1Jxsv09QoB0Es1FZl0PHfgPCPB5ncw-XWcn-ER=w1547-h870-s-no

Then a steel plate with a gasket that screws down on top of it. This is what stops the bearing walking itself out of the housing. The other side bears against the layshaft.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/ABLVV86_GcS6dMAYlA6jhgFThAGQDqOtj1oTlkOiXZD1wub5Pnxv0SWU_tbFJOYl0WXiSqPUP2AP5ziGmR2OlWa2rIDGxBABqKPQTz3ue9mxCARvjeXtcLA3SRGAtSz78Zcg0fOQyZ12CiTiQr6H4Z46yzGb=w1547-h870-s-no

I popped that cover plate off and it did seem like the insert was sitting slightly proud of the machined surface. I found a drift the right size to bear against the outer race and gave it a few sharp smacks. I think it's seated a bit further in and the insert is now sitting flush. A test on the workbench seemed a lot quieter, there's still a whine but it's more a straightcut gearbox sort of whine. I'll need to road test it again tomorrow to see if it's quietened down.

It wouldn't be a huge job to pop the gearbox outer cover off and replace that bearing if it's bad. if the noise has changed but is still there, I can be reasonably certain that's the source because I haven't touched anything else.

Sounding sweet and that LED headlight really dose make a difference compared to the no doubt piddly little original bulb.

6 days to go, is there much left to do or is it just MOT and testing miles now?

Cheers
John

MOT booked on Tuesday. Far as I can see it needs a proper exhaust clamp which should arrive on Monday and some fiddling with electrics.

Took some pics in daylight. I moved the kickstart forwards because it's right in the way there, it now sits forwards of your leg. Also moved the gearshift up because I wont be able to get my toe under it with bike boots on. It's got HUGE splines so it's now too high so you have to lift your foot off the peg to use it. In fairness though, it's not a snick through with your toe sort of gearbox, it's a whole leg operation. It's nowhere near as far away as the one on my trials bike.

9x7" numberplate looks rediculous. I have an 8x6" I'll swap in after the MOT.

Done a slightly longer road test. It fires up first kick, you can start it by hand either by pushing the kickstart or flicking the wheel round in gear once it's warmed up. Everything seems to work, the brakes are actually pretty good. Gets all four gears and pulled up the steep-ish hill next to my house in 3rd. It gets blown about something awful in gusty winds. Camping gear on the back will settle it down for the rally though. Just had to align the front wheel and adjust the clutch cable when I got back. I also put oko in the tyres.

I'll need to remember to take tie-downs for parking it, mainstand only on a light bike in a muddy field is a recipe for disaster.

Speedo also seems to work although I'm sceptical about the reading. I'll put the GPS on it to see how far out it is.

Happy days, looks good put in the light.

Aye hoon mentioned taking extra rope and pegs to nail bikes to the floor as a tip, I think my 1/4 ton slab of steel should be ok but I guess it cant hurt to be sure.

In 2020, full size sportsbikes were blowing over over the top of the sidestand (stand still down and it lifted both wheels off the ground, up and over.

Can you cover the rivets on the seat cover with some plastic trim? That bit of it just looks wrong, the rest of it hangs together in its way.

I could paint them black which is how they come from the factory.

Success and failure in equal measure.

Success first. MOT passed, no advisories.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/ABLVV86Hvxw2v2i2MhQUKLZHUvONODuaJKU_YGLSgJwfGV7QEJ_V9D68TFAjZswye1SApzJRXeH8ihq9212hvJxGHaYi1Nh7BX-ITY3x4CUELnN6A545vagEn68KxPFatlvPeoneRVtWLmjlEXceeSY6Bm-z=w489-h870-s-no

Failure. MOT tester fail. He kicked it past the stop and shattered the kickstart quadrant. "I kicked it twice then it made a bang noise now the kickstart doesn't work. Rolling Eyes

You can literally start this bike with your hand on the kickstart. He's banned from testing my bikes unsupervised now. He hurt himself when he tested my 612 bullet too, after being warned not to try starting it unless he knew what he was doing and to call me (I work just across the road) if he needed it starting.

I need to ride the bike on Friday. I found a UK supplier who has a kickstart quadrant and I've asked them to special delivery it, not sure if they will. It's not the Dragon rally unless you are fixing your bike the night before.

In other news, it's even more dog slow than I expected. Turns out I have an undersize front sprocket but that's easy fixed.

If it comes down to it, it is very easy to bump start or spin start in second on the stand but a kicker would be nice. It'll take about an hour to swap it in, I have the primary drive dismantled ready to take it if it arrives in time.

Parts arrived today. Now fitted and both strokes working within normal parameters. Also larger front sprocket fitted for speeds approaching 50mph.
