Little bro pickedup a Thundercat 600 that needs work. I noticed alternator cover was holed - could be issue if it's supposed to hold oil.
Anyone know?

I don't think they are. Google pics show some second hand ones which are slightly rusty inside too which seems to back that up. The stator is fixed to the inside of the cover though so it might be damaged if the cover has taken a beating.

I know for a fact that the stator cover does indeed hold oil, at least on Hondas. When I removed a charred, crispy stator on my Honda Pacific Coast, I immediately realized that it was the stator that was causing the engine oil to turn black. Engine oil is used to cool the coils.

My mistake. The parts fiche does not show a gasket for the stator cover. Yamaha apparently does not care whether the cover is sealed or not.

Thanks chaps.. Dry it is, which is a relief! Hopefully it's still charging once it's brought back to life.
