I'm looking to get new rims for my Minsk 125 and I'd rather not have to go down the road of getting a set drilled. I find motorcycle wheelbuilding companies both very slow and little short of a pain in the arse to deal with. Plus as soon as you want something custom making, the price skyrockets and this is a cheap, basic bike.

So I'm looking for something reasonably common with a close enough rim diameter and width that I can buy a set of off the shelf or used rims and lace them up to my hubs. The angles of the holes in the rim need to be right for the spoke angles on motorcycle rims.

They are dead simple. Even diameters on both sides of both hubs, 36 holes, 18" rims. They look very similar to drum-brake Honda hubs. CG125, CB250 etc.

I just can't find anywhere that has a list of spoke hole diameters and widths for motorcycles (it's readily available when you build bicycle wheels).

Mine are near as damnit 180mm diameter and 52mm wide. So something in that ballpark. I wonder if anyone has a bike with similar hubs that would mind measuring them for me? It's the diameter of the ring of spoke holes, not the overall diameter and the width at the spoke holes that's the important measurement. The holes would all need to be in a circle, not offset.

Not really. I'd have to tell them all about my hub and wheel dimensions so they can custom drill the rims. They are a wheelbuilders and so will immediately become an overpriced pain in the arse as soon as you aren't buying something off the shelf.

I've been there before and can't be bothered with the fuck-on, I'd rather paint the ones I have than have any actual direct dealings with one. In much the same way as I can no longer be arsed going into a motorbike shop and spending 20 minutes arguing about wether or not I want a part it turns out they'd have to order in anyway.

Unless they're damaged or rotted out I'd stop digging a money pit
trying to turn a pigs ear into a silk purse.
they were good enough for the MOT weren't they?

They are both damaged and most of the chrome has blown. I had to hammer one of the rims straight-is with a hammer and punch. I cleaned them up but they are red rusty after the weekend.

The spokes are pretty rusty too and need replacing. If the rims were in good nick, I'd just paint/powdercoat and re-spoke them but one in particular has a pretty huge ding in it. Also a previous owner has drilled the valve holes out to about 10mm so you can see the inner tube through them.

I have a sneaking suspicion they've been used for trials with rimlocks and mousses in.

It's also why I'm looking for another bike with similar size hubs so I can find a cheap or used set of rims for it. Even if it's a pair of rusty but straight wheels I can rob the rims off to paint. I was hoping it was similar to a CG125 because rims for those are ten a penny. I was actually hoping it was similar to MZs because they did some tasty alloy rims for those that can still be had but the hubs are radically larger on the MZs.

OK, going by the pics they didnt look too bad

How about rather than combining/mixing them with say CG rims
going going full retard and using the whole wheel/s?

I know this may well involve some faffing about but in the long run may make things easier

I'd consider using common as muck YBR 125 forks and wheel to take advantage of the alloy rim, disc brake and tubeless tyres

(I'd even consider sticking a YBR lump in there)

Possibly, but again, no idea what size the hubs are. I know the 350 ones are way too big. Maybe one of the 125 or 50cc ones but it would be like buying a random rim for anything else.

It's surprisingly important, if you get the holes drilled at the wrong angle, it puts a warp in the spokes and they can and do snap.

Well, yes. As I discovered when, without thinking, I bought a random rim off ebay to build a rear wheel for my GT250 which has a mahoosive hub - (the same as teh 550 I think) as a result the required spoke angle is quite acute and I drilled out and counter sunk the holes to get the nipples to sit even half flush..

In the end I chanced it and it appears to be OK, although not greatly tested with my 67kg bulk. TBH I'd have thought if the hub is approximately the same it would be 'good enough'. Jawa link sent cos
Iimagined all Iron curtain stuff to be approx the same.. maybe..
