Hi all me again,

Changed the oil on my bike yesterday and after a ride and getting back I checked the level and its around halfway on the dipstick, oil volume on the tech specs says around 850ml.

Is the half way mark ok or would it be best to top back up to max out the dipstick?

Trying to get into learning and maintaining bike correctly so sorry if this is a dull question.

As long as it's between the lines, it's good. I tend to run more modern/Japanese bikes towards the top mark. Older bikes (like old dry-sump brit bikes), it depends but there can be reasons for running them lower.

Check your manual for when you should be checking the oil level. Some bikes you check cold, some you idle for a specific time then check, some you check a certain time after stopping with a warm engine. After running, there is often oil up in the top end of the engine which gradually runs back down over time. Also check if it should be checked with the bike level, on the mainstand or on the sidestand.

Small capacity bike running a small amount of oil should be checked and topped up regularly.. easy to run low and then bang.

..unless this is a two stroke an you're only looking at gearbox oil, which raely needs topping up.

Indeed. I've told Mrts stinkwheel to get into the habit of checking the oil on her Honda Wave every time she fills up with petrol. Indestructable engine... Unless you run out of oil.

I believe half-way on any dipstick or sight glass is always ideal. It's right in the middle of the manufacturers recomendaations and you can clearly see of it's losing oil, or if something is finding it's way in.

Too high can cause damage too so if you put the specified amount in no need to worry, check it again a couple of times.
I do remember someone next door here thought you were supposed to put oil in until it reached the filler cap.
Luckily he didn't try to ride it but asked me why it needed so much.

Check the Owners Manual.

Some bikes with a twist off dipstick are checked when the dipstick is screwed in.
Some when the dipstick is is in the threads but not screwed in.

Its a fkng nightmare but the OEM guide should be where to look.

I have a bike that states:
Only after a lengthy ride.
Bike on centre stand.
Idle the bike for a bit
Remove the dipstick and wipe clean.
Install the dipstick resting on the oil tank but do not screw in.
Remove and check the oil level is between the marks.

That is a bit crazy if the oil is low then the engine will be fkd up after a lengthy ride.

The engine has a low oil level lamp and there is a wee corrugated tube on the side of the tank to give a clue if any oil is in it.
Remove the seat.
Remove the dipstick.
