Bet the skipper of that boat is feeling a bit silly.

Probably worse than silly as looking at 20 counts of manslaughter

From the video, looks far more likely to be a technical issue rather than a piloting error. Wil be an interesting report to read no doubt.

In the minutes leading up to the impact, lots of black smoke billowing out followed by 40 seconds where all the lights go out and it starts to veer off course.

Lights come back on but likely too late to avoid impact.

The pilot of the vessel radioed ahead of the crash warning the Port Authority that the vessel had lost nagivation control and power.

Continuous span truss meant it was inevitable. As soon as one support goes, it all goes.

Apparently the bridge was then able to be closed to further traffic as a result, presumably dramatically reducing the likely death toll.

When reading about the Baltimore bridge, for whatever reason the first thing that came to my mind was this 80's song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=--6CdAypJsQ Laughing

The only thing that trumps a moving container ship is land. Everything else loses.

She lost all power. That means no engines, no steering, nothing. It's a bloody frightening thing to happen when you are under pilotage, I know this.

What I don't understand is in a restricted water with a bridge like that why she didn't have escort tugs forward and aft specifically for that reason. Blackouts on ship are not a rarity.
