So I've just tried to fit some Oxford lever guards and the design seems to be the same as every other set available which is very flawed.

It expands into the inside of the bar but only at one end, meaning it can still wobble around. Okay you can bollock it up but it's still unsupported towards the end. I can't believe that this is the standard, surely not.

How have others got on with them?

Rubber tube with a nut on the end that compresses them? Yeah, they never seem to work all that well.

You tend to find OEM bar-ends are held in with a tightly fitting metal insert with a threaded hole that's driven into the end of the bar.

An alternative is to get a bit of alloy or steel tube that's a sliding fit in the end of the bar and cut it in half diagonally. Fit it with your bolt all the way through and a nut on the end. When you tighten the nut, the two pieces of tube try to over-ride one another and lock into the bar. Much more solid. This fairing bracket I made to fit up into the front subframe tube shows a similar idea.

The type I was referring to has an aluminum pipe with slots in it that expands.
I'm going to machine a better design of some description but I'm amazed that this is the standard.
I honestly can't see how it would ever work well.

I have a rubber style one like you mentioned in the other side temporarily, I think that will hold. But there is no way this aluminum thing will work long term. I was curious if anybody has had any success

It always occurred to me that what you could do, beyond hammering in a knurled, tight-fitting bung would be to cut a female thread on the inside of the bar then fit an insert with threadlock.

Bars vary but standard renthal alloy bars are 14mm ID which would take an M16 tap. You can buy an off the shelf M16 to M8 reducer insert...

I'm either going to machine something fairly elaborate that expands at both ends.... Or weld so something in the end and thread it.
There's not much meat to thread straight into on these.

I've always wondered if you could drive in a couple of those star-fangled nuts they use on bicycle steering stems. They seem to get an unreasonably good hold for how they look.

Or a rowl bolt...
