The wife's Rebel 500 has been sat and not used for about a year.

Coming up for 3 years old so dug it out the other day to run it up the garage for an MOT.

EML on but bike seems to run fine, although the fan is on constantly even when starting from cold.

I've got the OBD2 to Honda 6-pin adaptor and a fancy SnapOn diagnostics tablet (but doesn't list any motorcycles), I've also got two cheap generic hand-size readers, could have sworn one of them was for motorcycles as I cannot imagine why I would buy two, was pretty sure I bought one of them for use on the bikes but looking it up doesn't say it's motorcycle-specific.

AutoLink AL319
Launch Creader 3001 (this is the one I thought was motorcycle-specific, but it appears maybe not)

Anyway my problem is that plugging them in does not result in the units turning on.

Is it possible that motorcycle OBD scanners get power from a different pin? I know it's pin 16 on cars/vans. Or is it more likely the OBD2 fuse has blown on the bike?

Furthermore;

Can anyone recommend a decent / branded motorcycle-specific diagnostics scanner?

Preferably one that can go into specific makes and models and perform specific functions, rather than a generic code reader, and one that can do all/most makes.

I've got one I use on my BMW bike as well as the car - doesn't seem to be any difference

you do know you need to have the ignition switched on for it to work?

I'm sure you can buy a fancy diagnostic kit from Honda
but if all you need to do is read/delete fault codes on PGM-Fi
you can do this at minimum with a paper clip and read the eml flashes
I use 2 pin lead with a switch most of the time and don't have
to bother with OBD just to see what's triggering the fault.

It's also possible the DLC to OBD lead has been assembled incorrectly
this can be checked with a meter

Some bikes don't store codes at all... I found out with my GSX-S. If the MIL light goes out, no code can be read. I tried a car OBDII reader and it *kind of* worked? but I couldn't completely trust what it said.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

Healtech do an OBD reader for bikes. It's not generic and you have to buy the type for the make of interest so Honda, Kawa or Suz. Not Yam for some reason. It's not cheap either but it's pretty good IMO.

Yes, LOL!

I'll check the pins with a multimeter, I'll soon find out if none of them are giving a live output, in which case I assume we're probably looking at a fuse.

£150. I'd see that as an investment if it weren't for the fact that I've got a new BMW coming. Maybe generic is the way forward. Even that one doesn't do one of the big 4. Out of interest do you know if multiple manufacturers can be loaded the the unit for an extra cost? Or would you literally need a separate unit for each manufacturer? Website doesn't seem to give much info on that but I know Healtech are a decent company so I'd be happy to shell out if I knew I could set it up to do all three makes without having to have three separate units...

I think you have buy all three. Also I think they may have stopped developing it. For example all the latest Hondas are not listed as compatible.
