I know nothing except the basics about them, They run on magic smoke and don't go very far, and I don't really want one...... but

Wifie has a 50 mile commute everyday and in the diesel Tourneo connect its costing her a small fortune. Now I have my diesel Pug that goes minimum miles as I'm one of the old age scroungers that Labour hate so much!

So, thinking of trading in my Pug 2008 for and electric car and getting a home charger. Wifie could use that for work and I'll use her Ford to take the dog out and go to fetch my rum.

Thing is I know nothing about the myriads of ev's that seem to have hit the market (I'm going 2nd hand about 15 k available) So does any one have any experience of EV's? What would be decent at that price? Are Chinese ones as frighteningly awful as Chinese bikes are/were?

She wont get rid of the Ford as she uses it for camping when she goes away wild swimming or whatever she does when she and her gabbling group of women friends disappear for the weekend so its got to be the Pug going.

Does anyone even have an EV?

Prices are being hammered down, Ive seen a few that seem cheap enough to think fraud! but apparently they really do lose that much that quickly.

The chinese are banging them out fast enough to kill most competition - Honda are pulling out of a few places and are being murdered by them.
I reckon prices here are gonna go down further. Personally If I could afford a wee petrol thing I'd be doing that, mainly cos I dont see a future driving for much longer.

Im also of the opinion that fuel - expensive as it is is not gonna be more expensive than electricity on the dystopian future.

Edit to add: I know there are devices to literally steal these cars in seconds, and dont even start me on the mileage staller...

Kinda wondering how insurance for them is panning out now too!

Lots of people seem to be buying BYD and Jaecoo. It seems they also have some suspect marketing tactics where they pay influencers to review their cars and are not allowed to say anything negative. Personally I’d be looking at a small Hyundai or Kia as they are meant to be excellent and don’t have the issues with being Chinese or Fascist. It sounds like an electric car would suit your needs. The issue with them is when the manufacturers make claims about them which mean people whose needs are not met by them are conned into going for one and then are put off.

Short journeys, in town no further than a couple of hundred miles at a go, always returning home to a charger that can be used when electricity is cheap, that’s the electric car sweet spot. Doing 400 mile journeys every week? Get a petrol or diesel.

10k for a brand new (pre registered) electric car seems insane. Looking at reviews they are basic with about 100 miles real world range which would be absolutely fine for what I want. Bloody hell, thats put a cat among the pigeons.

Dacia are rebadged Renaults aren't they?

The 50 mile commute, is that each way or in total?

52 weeks in a year with 4 weeks annual leave means commuting for 48 weeks so that's 24,000 miles each year if its 50 miles each way or it's 12,000 miles each year if the 50 miles is for the round trip.

I'm guessing you don't have solar panels?

How many years does she expect to be doing that commute for?

She gets about 40 to 50 miles per gallon in the Tourneo connect?

No, we don't have solar panels on the house and she will be commuting 50 miles round trip for the next 4 years till she retires.

Road Tax is ludicrous though to answer piazza, £20 a year for my Pug, £200 for a cheap EV Shocked

Yes, I agree looking at it long term it doesn't make a lot of difference financially, BUT, I'd be paying for the car and I pay for the electricity (she gives me a few hundred a month towards bills etc) while she pays for her diesel for her car. So from her point of view it's rather desirable and TBH I can afford it and if it gives me enough brownie points I might get to upgrade my boat!!!

It just seems a convenient thing to do. We have a cheap run around EV for the city and surrounding areas and the commute and still have the ford for long distances and wont be putting 12000 miles a year wear on it.

Sounds to me like you should just swap cars.

Maybe buy yourself a Honda Innova for fetching rum.

Like most bikers of a certain age, I'm a dyed in the wool petrol head. I really didn't expect much from the whole EV thing.

When my wife's little Fiat 500 finally got too old for her 50-60 mile daily commute through a mix of very rural Scotland (sort of a road, just watch for sheep, deer, cattle and trees as well as what I'll charitably call potholes - although I'm fairly sure I've seen bald monks in saffron robes peering out) and a stretch of the A1, she went for a top spec 22 plate Renault Zoe. Not that top spec means much Laughing

I mostly approve, for an automatic. Drives well even though it's pretty much the lowest end of what's available and when it works it's awesome. Less than £1 a day to commute and it gives us access to cheaper electrickery overnight. If I can get my paws on a big enough battery then that's cheap power all the time.

What I will say though, I wouldn't touch second hand. Particularly at the lower end of the market. We got it as a lease, something I always swore I'd never do, but in the time we've had it (~2.5 years) it's been in the garage for 7 months. All under warranty.

First was a full replacement of the traction module (what we'd call the engine) as a bearing in the motor had shat itself. The fun one was a charging issue. Renault have in true French fashion designed a wonderfully arcane charging circuit that uses the motor windings as part of the system. After the motor was replaced the car wouldn't charge at home (AC/slow charge) but it would charge on DC. The service centre took it back again, said after a week it was fixed and when I collected it we could charge on AC but not DC (fast charging) so back in it went. This dragged on for months and they eventually flew a pair of techs over from France as it was a new issue. Not much use to us, but there y'go. In fairness to Renault they supplied a courtesy car though out.

Make of that essay what you will. If we'd bought a cheap car outright (not that we could afford it) then we'd have been stuck with repair bills in the many thousands. Hence I personally wouldn't countenance taking on an EV with no warranty.

Other than that, we do a lot of miles on mixed roads including longer (~1200 mile round) trips in this thing and it's fine. Comfortable enough, charges quick enough that it's a pit stop rather than a chore and good enough range. Watch for winter range issues though, we comfortably get 240 miles in the summer when driving like a grandma, winter range is around 160. Temperature really affects your battery, not just whether your lights/heater is on.

15k just about puts you in Elons sights.

I've had a model 3, (company car) for 18 months now. I didn't want to like it, I tried my best, I really did, but I do.

Mines a 71 plate, long range AWD and it'll do the 100 mile commute easily, with tread to spare and cost about a tenner, less if you get an EV tariff at 8p a KWH. (I haven't bothered because I claim it back anyways.) We have solar as well so in summer I can fully charge it for free.

If the Mrs is a technophobe however, like mine, it can be bewildering to try and figure out. Even opening the glovebox is a menu driven affair and my Mrs flatly refuses to drive it. (if it doesn't have a manual gearbox and buttons she doesn't want to know)

It has it's quirks and its annoyances, as they all do, and getting a home charger fitted can be a challenge in some cases but overall, on balance, It works for me.

What's the news on people suing for tripping over the cables when they are run across the pavement from someone's house, even if they have been enclosed in those flat rubber things?

I've only just got the hang of not looking down at my feet/phone due to being nagged by various health-assailants that I am ruining my vision and posture by constantly looking down.

Now one has to look down (or at least forward, in an anticipatory sort of way) to avoid breaking one's fucking neck instead. Rolling Eyes

Laughing

Its not right. I should be allowed to drift along in a daydream (or stupor, depending on the day) and not have to worry about these things.

Its enough to have to put up with these idiots on bicycles on the pavement and let's not even mention those Boomer droids on spaz chariots with a pack of Staropramen in their basket, all thinking they are fucking Sterling Moss, without having to trip over goddam electrical cords as well!
