I put the wee scoot up for sale in Freeads
(with a phone number in the ad btw) and got this
I've used some colour to try and help clarify things
"You have a message from Anthony
Hi, Is it still available, are you the first owner and does it have any damage or dent? I will be deactivating my profile after I send this message because of the junk response I received from other sellers but I prefer to buy yours.
There are some dishonest people on here because I paid a deposit of £1000 for an item to a seller and he disappeared with it. I am security conscious, I prefer direct communication through my personal email so that the seller and I will have the contact information of each other.
I would appreciate it if you could send a current photo or write more information about it to my email: shoutofvictory@outlook.com
P.S Please all responses should be direct to my email and after I receive your message, we will fix the viewing date and sort out the payment."
I wrote a warts and all, honest description and put pics in the ad.
It didnt feel right but out of curiosity sent this to shoutofvictory@outlook.com
"There is a description and pics in the ad as well as a telephone number
why didn't you just ring?"
then got this response from Anthony Shepherd<rortbert@gmail.com>
I appreciate your swift response and apologies for the delayed response. Do consider it as sold to me so that other interested individuals won't make inquiry about it because I will be presenting it as a special gift to my graduate cousin. One of the reasons I asked if it is still available.
My cousin will be graduating in a couple of weeks and it must be presented to him. I want to make proper arrangements regarding the payment and collection ahead to avoid delay because I will also be traveling for my honeymoon holiday. I will issue a cheque as payment and after it is clear, we will fix appointments for the collection. Email your name and address for the cheque:
Name:
Address:
Price:
Mobile Number:
I will ensure the payment arrives at your address within 5 working days.
Kind Regards
Anthony Sheperd
to which I replied:
Cheques not acceptable
Cash or bank transfer only and there is also a legal handover process to follow for
both buyer and seller protection or no sale.
Todays email:
Hello,
I will make arrangements for the collection after the cheque is cleared in your account. Do not release it until your bank confirms payment cleared. I wish I could make a bank transfer to complete the sales sooner but I have informed my bank to block my online transfer due to my honeymoon to avoid excess spending because we have a budget amount for our holiday. After the cheque is cleared in your account, my transport agent will come to your address for the collection. Below is my contact information:
Anthony Sheperd
4 Benmadigan Road,
Drimnagh,
Ireland.
(This address exists its in SW Dublin, but he doesn't include an Irish postcode)
Email your details and how you want your name to be written on the cheque
Name:
Address:
Price:
Mobile number:
I will make sure the payment arrives at your address within 5 working days.
Kind Regards
Anthony Sheperd
This just feels dodgy to me but I'm curious as to what kind of scam it is
The English is good but has a non native speaker whiff to it.
Note how my refusal to take a cheque and insistence of a by the book handover
is ignored.
I've had emails and swapped forum messages from lots of Irish folk and they
often used colloquialisms and slang but the tone of these emails just doesn't feel right.
Could this be the 'overpaid by cheque then asked for some money transferred back before I realise the cheque was dodgy and bounces ' scam ? or something else? ____________________ bikers smell of wee

It reads exactly like one of those AI generated youtube ads for Chinese shite like car paint treatment and shite pressure washers.
Tell him to give you a call to discuss it. Or just tell him it's sold. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

Standard fake cheque / fake payment scam.
The cheque they send you will look real enough and when you deposit it into your bank account it will clear as expected. A few weeks later when the bank realises that the cheque is fraudulent then the payment gets reversed.
The scam will also involve the cheque they send you being for more than expected and they'll give you some overly complicated reason for why that's happened and for why you need to send the excess to them using western union / amazon vouchers / apple vouchers / bitcoin or whatever other payment method that can't be reversed.
Banks don't like customers who get involved with fraud so they might put a Credit Industry Fraud Avoidance System (CIFAS) flag against your name by adding you to their register of naughty people.
"I would appreciate it if you could send a current photo or write more information about it to my email:"
Wanting to take the conversation to a different platform is a huge red flag. The fact they really don't care about what the item is or any details is also a gigantic red flag.
They don't care about the scooter, they care about getting you to send them a real payment that can't be reversed. Nobody will collect the scooter because there is no transport agent.
I'm very disappointed as you know all the stuff about scams involving dodgy cheques yet you still replied to them. |
