Tried to renew my insurance today as my policy expires tomorrow.

I noticed the date they showed for me passing my test was incorrect and asked them to correct it. It showed a date in 2007 but I have had my licence since 1980.

Because of this they used it as an excuse to re-run the quote through their system.

Computer says we want another £10 on top of the 50% increase that they already have added this year.

They were promptly told to Foxtrot Oscar.

I have since realised that when you use the comparison websites they dont ask you when you passed your test - they just ask how long you have held your licence ie 1,2,3 yeare etc and this maxes out at 15+ years.

One to watch when renewing insurance

Company concerned was Swinton

Moral of the story - don't volunteer anything to them

All that's happened here is that you gave them a reason to have to rerun the quote. And everyone knows that the nearer the renewal date you run the quote, the higher the price.... sweet spot is supposed to be about three weeks beforehand I think.

If anything, the moral of the story is don't trust the comparison sites to furnish the insurers with accurate information. The shortlist of reasons for claims which get entered into comparison sites, versus how those end up get being interpreted on the insurers site, can be quite astounding.

I remember getting into an argument with an insurance broker because the terminology of the comparison website didn't line up with their own on their system.

The argument was about the fact that the car was parked on Private land, but publically accessible (private flats), and NOT a public car park, nor a private driveway. Rolling Eyes They asked me to confirm the go ahead, I said clearly 'I do not confirm'. Eventually they called back to amend the terminology on the policy without cost.

I'd got a couple of quotes in advance of renewal and was quite Confused As they were up to 50% higher than last year.
But when the renewal email came it was about £5 less than last years so still direct with Swinton.

My house insurance has doubled for no reason. I thought it was just the provider being gougey but a run of some price comparisons showed them within £20 of the lowest quote, which for me means I'll just let it roll over for another year (requiring zero additional effort on my part) rather than go through the rigmarole of switching.
