I've never owned any drones beyond the toy ones Maplin* used to sell so I've no idea if this idea is feasible...

Sat in traffic on the way back from the seaside yesterday I recalled a scene from Cyberpunk 2077 where a drone pops out of one of the characters cars and surveys the area.

What's the range on an FPV drone? Could I pop open the sunroof and send it down the road to figure out what's happening Smile

*Blast from the past!

Yes, No and Maybe.
Not legal if not line of sight (i.e. in view at all times and able to see which way it is pointing) - but most users see this as somewhat flexible since they typically have almost instantaneous video feed and GPS position on mapping.

Range of e.g. mini3 pro is around 500m even if you are sat in a car.
Realistically it might be an option to just go straight up and see how far the line of cars stretched. A cheaper one could do that.
It would be panic stations if they start to move as default is try to return to where it took off.

The range is sufficient and yeah you can send it down the road to see what's happening apart from you're not necessarily meant to fly them over roads and when the traffic starts moving again the drone will need to get back to you sooner rather than later.

Let us know how it works out. Laughing

Any drone less than 250g isn't subject to those restrictions. Prety sure that no flly zone still applies though.

My FPV has done 1600-1640ft high and about 3km in front of me. Got some really good views on Saturday actually which I can pm over.

Legal? No idea, do I care, not really.

It coming back is a problem as it has a home point which was take off. If it was a proper long tailback and you were definitely stopped in traffic I'd get it out just for a nose.

Realistic range of the DJI FPV is about 4-5km with clear sight and if you add a decent antenna, it can go further but some UK/EU think about 6km being the limit. I've flown it out over the sea in Lincolnshire, did about 1.5 miles at 300ft before I bottled it due to battery, it is smart enough to know when to return, but I don't gamble! Laughing

There are various ways to let them go further the simplest being to crack the CE power to FCC and maybe add a plus battery (DJI) taking it over 250g.
Not realistic for quick check of traffic apart from anything else it's all quite time consuming.

It does annoy me the DJI sales promo emails stating huge ranges I have seen 32km mentioned Laughing without even adding in very small print (not possible in CE regions)

Mines nearly 1kg all in, I'd rather not extend the range! Laughing
