My ignition has recently broken, in that the key had to be turned to a certain point between on and off for the bike to power on.
I changed the ignition lock barrel yesterday and the problem got even worse, though it still tries to power on - now the point at which it finds power is near impossible to find.
When I do find it, the bike splutters but doesn’t start.

Additionally, shortly before my ignition started to fail, so did my tail light - would only light up when the brake was pressed.

Having changed the ignition barrel, I know that’s not the issue, and the guy at my local garage told me the issue with my tail light is some internal electrical problem rather than a bulb problem if it still comes on when braking.

When researching the ignition problem, I saw one forum post saying they fixed the issue without having to change the lock by getting a new 12v relay for their 08 YBR and doing some rewiring, and I’m wondering if this might be the solution for me too?

Also were they likely referring to the starter relay? (Located just to the right of the battery) or something else, because my relay uses a 16A fuse but I couldn’t find anything about voltage.

I’ve also seen other forum posts about similar tail light issues likely being linked to ignition problems, so this is my best idea what it could be.

I’m pretty novice to this stuff so would anyone more in the know be able to understand my issues and how to fix them?

Looking forward to hearing from you guys

That's absolute bollocks. There are two different elements on the rear bulb. A dimmer, 5W (typically) one for the main light and a brighter 25W one for the brake light.

Aside from being in the same bulb their only electrical connection they have is the neutral.

It could well bbe that that bulb elemennt is actually blown.

How do you know that? You shouldn't need to fiddle with the key to power on the bike. Turn the key "on"; you should hear the fuel pump prime the fuel system, the lights illuminate and the horn button should operate the horn. If all that is happening, your problem is not with the ignition switch. If some of that is happening, your problem is probably elsewhere. If none of that is happening, your problem is in the ignition switch.

Relays are nothing more than electrically controlled switches. The YBR electrical system is plenty robust as manufactured. I caution you against butchering it up if you are unsure of what you are doing.

It was troublesome trying to deal with the tamper proof bolts but I drilled through them and I've got replacements.
Took the original lock (attached to the front yoke) down to the garage, the guy smashed the old ignition lock odd with a hammer and chisel, and the bolts were still in there so I drilled them out.

Not the cleanest or easiest job in the world dealing with those bolts and in the end i'll most likely superglue the new bolts in to keep everything in place, then when it comes to replacing either part I'll just buy both and get it done more professionally.

My point is, when I could only get the bike to power on to do anything when the key is partially rotated (the point at which this happens is hard to find and easily disrupted), and changing the ignition lock yields the exact same problem, then the problem isn't with the ignition lock.
It's something electrical already existing elsewhere in the bike.

What I'm wondering is, if anyone has the knowledge to tell me if it seems this ignition problem is likely linked to my lack of idle/non braking tail light - and if so, would they be able to tell me where the problem might lie.

My research has suggested otherwise but I'll keep looking into it

I'd want to rule out earth problems, to check get a decent jump lead connect it directly to battery negative terminal and bright part on bike.
