I have some halvarssons textile waterproof trousers, they have only been tested seriously once but passed with flying colours, good features, and comfortable, but, they are a bit bulky. I probably should have bought the next size down but they were a bit of a bargain at the time so went with them, but for walking around towns etc off the bike they are a bit of a pain.

Does anyone make waterproof textile gear thats not so bulky, surely its not all like this ?

I can relate. I have "proper" over trousers and they're so heavy I've probably only worn them once or twice.

I usually just buy the cheapest shite and just bin 'em when the seams go. These are the ones I bought last time and they've lasted surprisingly well:

I wouldn't fancy walking about town in anything waterproof in weather that called for lightweight bike trousers. You'll land up just as wet from sweat.

That's what most people put something waterproof on over the top if it's raining.

Maybe some of the aerostitch stuff? It's cordura but a high enough denier that it's pretty much waterproof.

It depends on what level of protection you want. If you want the full set of armour, abrasion resistance, reinforced seams etc then they are going to be bulky. At the moment one doesn't come without the other. If you're happy to sacrifice (some of) that, then single layered but motorcycle jeans will be lighter and breath better for general use, and you can get waterproof(ish) ones.

As for waterproof overtrousers, look a something mountaineering based for lightness & packability. The ones with a zip partway down the legs are good as hikers have the same problems as us bikers in getting waterproof over our boots whilst hopping on one leg.

Partly related to the original post, it occurs to me what I could make the most use of is trousers that are shower resistant and breathable rather than absolutely waterproof. Something for those caught out in the middle of the ride moments. If it's absolutely pissing down I'd be wearing the waterproof over trousers before setting off.

What's a good material beside the overrated and overpriced Gore-Tex?

Why breathable - unless bicycle.

Partially agree, your legs don't produce anywhere near the amount of sweat as much as the rest of you, but given you can buy a pair of waterproof* & breathable* over trousers for £10 from Amazon, why would you buy none breathable?

*alleged.

Yea it's this I'm looking at, textile armoured waterproof trousers, like I have now but slimmer in the leg, I wasn't sure if they were all pretty bulky or some better than others

I bought some Richa Colorado 2 trousers yesterday, much slimmer in the leg than what I had before, tried a few others on and it seems the vast majority of textiles are overly bulky

Waterproof and light. Kevlar undergarment and your ass will be fine. Actually the kevlar undergarment is a good idea I might have to purchase one from Ali express for 12 quid. Might even go for the latex with it.
