I bought a service kit on eBay from a shop with thousands of reviews, 99.7% positive. It came with a counterfeit spark plug–a common NGK CR6HSA (£3-4 retail).

NGK have a guide for identifying fakes, but I though I'd share some pictures here for reference.

Note the original's font weight, the lighter blue, and the corrugations on the insulator:

On the fake plug, note the poor thread quality on the terminal stud, the smudged lettering, and the overall oxidation:

On the fake plug, note the machining marks above and below the hex, the uneven thread, and the arch of the ground electrode:

The original box is less flimsy and shiny; as of last year, NGK Spark Plug Co became Niterra Co:

If you’ve recently serviced your bike and it’s running worse than before—perhaps with a rough idle—it’s worth checking the spark plug.

Good spot, how did you get on with eBay seller when you told them about the fakes?

I do not usually post much anymore but this is one of those times when I felt I need to respond.

I bought some NGK plugs for the Exup1000 from M&P a while ago. They seemed okay until on the way home from a breakfast ride when it went onto two cylinders, numbers three and four.I knew that it was not anything to do with the coils as they are high output Dyna items.
Once I managed to get home I pulled on the plug caps and two of them came away easily. As can be seen in the pictures, the core has come away.I can only put this down to fake plugs as I have never experienced this before.
I can only say that I had never previously bought spark plugs from M&P before, but this will be the last time.I do not buy them on eblag either.

Nice post, good pics, well done
I just bought the same plug (CR6HSA) for a YBR I often work on and am embarrassed to admit I didn't think check it.
Oops! hope it not a wrong un but I'll get him to bring it over to check soon.

Very unlikely that M&P have knowingly sold fake plugs.
Have you tried contacting them?

I had a situation with a spark plug years ago when I was restoring a little Suzuki 100 two-stroke.I bought it from my local bike parts shop and once home the bike ran for five minutes then stopped. There was a spark but it was feint.I took the plug back to the shop to ask and they said that there was no warranty because the spark plug could have been dropped or whatever. They were not expensive back in those days, about £2.50,so I bought another one, took it home and started the engine after I had fitted it.The engine ran perfectly and the bike was sold after a new MoT certificate was issued.

As for the plugs for the Exup,I did not bother to contact M&P as I would quite likely get the same response as from my local bike shop.

In the end I bought some standard copper core items and they have been perfect.

Use a better shop.
