I do now haz got a new bike again
It's a 41 year old Honda GL500 and that makes it tax and MOT exempt
It ran out of tax and MOT in 2016 and has been stowed away ever since in a mate's garage
He's been living in Vietnam ever since and came back to clear out the garage and on a whim I bought it from him.
It was too cheap to say no to TBH.

The clocks say a mere 14,500 mile and the MOT history supports this
so it could have a lot of life left in it.
AFAIK it was running fine before failing the mot running out of tax
and him going away

Note that these models have the genuine Honda Mono shock
'Prolink' suspension unlike the cafe boys shabby fucked up version done on too many earlier ones.
When you compare them, one is rugged and fit for purpose....

Is that an original 'Windjammer' fairing?

I never could decide if I likes or disliked them back in the day. Course they got a good rep for courier bikes having shaft drive and being reliable.

Have fun getting it back up to scratch. Thumbs Up

I had one of those back in '81

Lovely, comfy bike. Handled surprisingly well I thought.

I really wanted a Goldwing but as i was only 20 at the time I couldn't afford the £500 insurance.

The Silverwing (GL500) insurance was £400 so I bought that instead.
Sold it a few years later to pay for some decorating work the (ex) wife wanted doing

22 Railway Cuttings East Cheam
The key's under the mat

The Bike under the cover is mah Yamaha Majeste 250

The fairing is original just painted black, it does look windjammer-ish
but no idea who made them for Honda
I removed the screen to protect it and it just needs a jolly good polish
as its discoloured.

First glance impressions:
Original twin exhaust has rusty downpipes and collector
Front fork seals fooked
Front calipers look seized but discs Ok
Front master cylinder fooked
Seats need a recover
I can see the front camhaft oil seal is leaking, not uncommon on these
pretty easy and cheap to fix
The tyres were flat but when re inflated I could see no cracking in the sidewalls so they'll do for now.
It's mostly intact if shabby and nothing's been robbed off it which is good.

A snag I have to address soon is the key was lost ages ago
I took the fairing and ignition switch off to see if I could get a code but couldn't
I can easily bypass the ignition switch but need a key to open the tank and the helmet lock things at the rear in order to remove the
rears seat/trunk thingy
I'm hoping I can get a key made if I take the lock in to a locksmiths

You could try a 'Bogata rake' to pick the fuel cap (I managed to do this once) then see of the lock has a number on it.. You can make your rake and a tension tool from an old hacksaw blade, a bench grinder or file and a heat source (for tempering).

It's fun but harder than teh pros make it look.

Yes I mostly made it out of scrounged and found stuff.
its got 17aH agm battery and can jump start a bike with it or use it as a multiple ( 6/8) USB and (1/2) 12v power outlet.
I fitted 2 smallish speakers into it and put a cheap mechless stereo in I've had on the shelf for ages.
Nothing fancy but it does have BT, USB, Aux in and SD as well as radio
so I can charge my phones, tablets, torches etc and play media as
I work outside without needing the van to be switched on.
I can charge it on on the go from a cigar lighter socket or obviously,
indoors from a mains charger

Yep I've done this before but like you suggest, its fiddly
and I had varied success.
I shall ring a local auto lock joint and get a quote first

God no, a Goldwing wouldn't have got involved. I recon it's a rape between a Harley and guzzi.

Same fairing and clocks as the GW's of that era,
Honda named some of them the Silverwing and it was intended as
a lightweight tourer/commuter.
The engine is fundamentally the same as the earlier CX500
but was upgraded with the better TI ignition, more power output from the G8 stator (same as the GW used ) and auto cam chain tensioner.
the suspension is better than the CX too which used skinny Superdream forks

I was never a fan of the looks CX or GL but beneath the plastic
they were a reliable workhorse if not neglected and many clocked up big miles.
The cam chain was the worst thing as it was often neglected
until it was chewing its way out of the casing and by then it had often polluted the oil ways and galleries with alloy slurry.
A worn chain could also thrash about so much it broke the tensioner
manual or auto and all these problems could have been avoided with proper attention and maintenance.

I wonder how many other people have got this reference . . . hopefully the cover will protect it from "dirty great lumps of coal" being thrown at it, make sure you move it when they resurface the road. Or get Bill to do it.
