I'm working on a project that involves kitchen printing. I've already come up with a way to print out Thai composite characters so now I'm moving onto Japanese and Korean.

For example, "Udon" would normally be written in Hiragana うどん but you could also write it in Katakana ウドン for essentially the same effect phonetically. Thing is, most cheap printers only support Katakana.

Is a Japanese chef going to be weirded out by inappropriate use of Katakana?

This is what I'm worried about. I can blindly store any sort of Japanese written script - such is the power of modern computing - but I'll only be regurgitating it in (and this seems strangely apropos) "Chinese Room" style.

From my studies so far it seems like the Japanese have an alphabet for every day of the week Laughing A note on wikipedia, for example:

My son knows some Japanese so I asked him.

Says he's not sure, but - "Katakana is primarily for foreign words or secondarily for stylistic purposes such as adding emphasis. It might change the vibe slightly but I wouldn't be too worried. There's a lot of nuance though which would probably require a native speaker to sift through. (This is just for single words... if you try using whole sentences in only Katakana it would be strange)".

I'd suggest trying asking at https://www.reddit.com/r/LearnJapanese/ - 700,000 subscribers with an active interest in Japanese might generate a few more responses than a bunch of British bikers... Wink

No because a Japanese is probably going to expect it to be in Kanji instead: 饂飩

Edit: but will expect a baka gaijin to simply use either hirigana or katakana as they don't know any better and that is acceptable to a polite Japanese who appreciates you tried.

Katakana is for foreign words only. Because the Japanese in charge are cretins and think 'cultural sofistikation' is more important than global functionality. It's a significant part of the reason why Japan is bankrupt, shitloads of foreign businesses just won't deal with it.

Kanji, Hiragana, Katakana and Romaji. All they need is Romaji, then both the Japanese and the rest of the world could be on the same page. 1950's era fuckwads. They don't even have sensors on the traffic-lights here ffs.

I didn't say he would eye roll Laughing

I actually said he would be happy you silly foreigner tried your best to read/ write his language.

Every Japanese I have ever known has seen it as a good thing whenever foreigners try to engage in their culture.

Cultural appropriation is a bullshit western idea that nobody outside of white self-hating people cares about. Normally people like when you show interest in their culture.

One of my banks tried to turn me over for around £700 in fees but after a session on the phone and an elevated call-back I got it back. I wasn't polite either. Oh boy, was I not polite. Mr. Green

If we start just locally and forget international sales for a moment there's three areas of contact in hospitality software.

The punter gets a printed receipt so all in English. The front of house terminal is a touch screen and we can display any language required with minimal effort. The kitchen though will most likely have tickets spat out by a simple impact printer.

The cheesiest way to sidestep a language barrier is have "Tempura" on the front of house and have "153" print out in the kitchen with a big chart on the wall mapping the numbers to whatever native language the chef speaks. Our customer base is fine dining, we're not going down the cheesy route Smile
