Was once studying for my pilots licence back in the 1990s until someone decided to park a Mitsubishi shogun on top of my CB900F. I was on it at the time.

Smashed leg, much metalwork holding it together, countless cancelled ops to remove it all again and 18 months on crutches put paid to the flying and that once in a lifetime job that paid for it.

So I got into flight simulators to get my flying fix. They were ok for operating aircraft but a bit meh.

Then Eagle Dynamics released the A10C warthog module, latterly used for pilot training by the USAF (and still is, using VR, although no doubt with far more modern and still classified avionics fitted)
Never was a sim so realistic and Hog pilots assert if you can fly the module in VR, you can fly the real thing. Only thing missing is the seat of the pants thing.

Enter affordable VR and my joy was complete. A dream come true, flying far more complex aircraft than my beloved Rheims Cessna C172 GBEUX.

I have built my own VR cockpit and can start the aircraft from cold using physical switches, placed in exactly the same place as you see them in the cockpit, just reach out and flip them on.

VR cockpit and rig..

Of course, in VR, I am not sat in the rig, I cannot see it, I am sat in

Not really got into flight simulators but at one time I did have a pair of force-feedback joysticks for something like MechWarrior 2.

That is smashing! I do sim racing, usually iRacing. Can't play it anymore without VR, it just doesn't cut it even 3 screens. I have tried flight sims a few years ago but was struggling to get airbourne with IL-2 Sturmovik! I guess that's a bit out of date these days.

If you ever needed to know how to start the hog...

Everyone does it slightly differently, its a case of within narrow parameters, you do what works for you.

For instance, in the vid he switches on his avionics while still on APU generator power.

I do not. I wait for engine 1 generator to come online and start delivering clean AC power whereby the APU generator is then switched off. This prevents any rare but potential current spikes switching between engine bus 1 and the APU AC bus from frying the delicate electronics.
Not a big deal in the sim, but it was a big deal during my flying lessons. Always wait for the engine generator before switching on the radios and transponders. I try to keep it real as I was taught. Whether this applies on the real life Hog is unknown.

Downside is you add a minute or so to your startup in the sim as the INS is turned on and starts its alignment a minute or so later.

How to fire up a Hog.

I prefer the commie stuff in DCS (Mig 15, 19 and 21). In IL2 I'm a veteran Luftwaffe ace. Mr. Green

Not DCS, but I've got a high end Logitech steering wheel for playing Dirt Rally 2.0. Force feedback, true force and vibration with pedals. It's about the closest thing you can currently get to really driving without having five POV monitors, VR or motion simulation. I'm better with the wheel than I was with the joypad, but I'm still comparatively bad compared to some of the nutters out there who must essentially be professional rally drivers.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.
