Trudeau is out:

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2025/jan/06/justin-trudeau-to-step-down-as-canada-prime-minister

Apparently it'll take the best part of 3 months to find his replacement in which time the Canadian Parliament will be on hold (prorogued). The resignation is no surprise to anyone and neither is closing the doors to parliament, both previously predicted as potential stalling tactics by Conservative leader Poilievre as a snap election now would see Trudeau's Liberal Party wiped from the board.

The new prime minister will fart about for another 6 months or so, expect a general election towards the end of 2025.

The prorogual will only stop the rest of parliament from holding a vote of no confidence until there is a new PM, and at that point winning one would cause an immediate election, which would have to be held by November in any case.

So why don't they just have a general election now? Seems stupid hamstringing the governing of the country for the sake of a few months.I suppose at heart he is a typical politician, party and idealism before country.
