The forum.

Wasn't sure where to put this but even allowing for it being winter there is very little talked about. The forum is going days without any posts now which is something I have never seen before.

Should we raise a placemarker post in the Dead Celebrities thread?

Or maybe the categories just need a bit of a reshuffle: accommodate the contents of the OFF TOPIC forum/s into other areas Laughing

I wonder if it's corresponding to real life? The people who ride for fun are giving up/dying off. The new generation ride scooter because they are practical and cheap, not because they want to.

I would be interested to compare sales figures of new bikes now compared with say 10 years ago. We used to have someone who posted them every month but that was a long time ago and I can't remember who it was. (senility again Laughing )

It's declined in pace with the mental health of the UK, crazy as that might sound.

Online bike related posting has largely moved to facebook groups.

Forums as a whole are a dying platform. Loads Ive been on for decades are similarly dead/dying. Everything is moving to facebook groups, which I hate because its so much harder to find anything in FB groups and they seem to attract a particular type of knob. Then you end up fractured between 17 different groups trying to find an answer to one question. Plus I just cant stand FB in general. Or for the proper yoofs, theyre moving to Discord which is even worse.

It also doesn't help having such archaic forum software and no app or phone friendly layout.

According to another forum I use, the new online safety bill will kill forums as you need to have age verification or something which will be too costly to implement, they are waiting to see what approach mumsnet takes hahaha.

I noticed a drop in forum usage when FB started and folk seemed to be migrating to sosho meeja where they could fiddle with their fuckin phones all day and use short emoji ridden sentences to match their low vocabulary and dwindling attention span.
It must be 10 years ago I was at a bike club related meet up near Tewkesbury and one guy had his new phone and was constantly fiddling with the thing and wittering on about FB.

You'd think his time would have been better used to catch up with folk who rarely meet in real life and use the time to develop and cement relationships, but I see now it was a sign of times to come.

I can also remember times when some people here squealed like stuck pigs about anyone getting remotely verbose when posting.
Yes I know, Teflon Mike was exceptional and didn't exactly have an economy of style and did go on a bit too much at times, but it didn't bother me that much.

I've also noticed that despite what the membership figures on any forum were, the actual active users were always a fraction of that.
This place is definitely quieter than before but not dead yet,
one forum I belong to may not get a new post for weeks at a time.

BCF might be dying but it's not as dead as the visordown forum, the rev counter forum, rainpal, the MCN forum and many others which have long been forgotten.

With the right leadership BCF could be made great again. By monitising BCF we could do away with Google Ads.

FFS, we don't even have a merch store offering the latest limited edition BCF t shirt designs. We need some product placements, the mens health thread is perfect for any of the companies who offer blood test testosterone level testing stuff.

BCF needs to have patreon.com as well.

You can get 20% off in the merch store on all orders made before the 1st of January 2025. Wub

I like this one, though i'd rather be able to visit it on Netscape 4 again like I used to.

Modern forums are very visual - provided from few vendors, and seem to have little actual useful content from participants.

Unfortunately this.
I hate it when you click on a Website button and it takes you to a crappy facebook page where it seems to be totally chaotic.

Forums are dying in general, there are less people passionate about riding as there used to be thanks to how many more hoops there are to jump through to get a license so less young blood in it.

Rest of you old gits only post in not bike related cause;
a) dont ride anymore
b)theres no new bikes out there intesting to talk about
c) do ride but have got sensible scooters/commuters/ never actually 'adventured' adventure bikes so theres nothing to talk about
d) all of the above.

From what I've seen of the stats, the desire for motorcycles has been low but stable for the last few years but there's been a shift to smaller engined / cheaper bikes.

Facebook groups are packed though so I dont think the number of bikers is dropping that much. I think the problem is new bikers just go to facebook or discord for advice and not even looking for forums anymore.

I think the old software and look of the site doesn't really help either.

Might have been. He was of course the most prolific poster on here. I really cant remember but it was quite interesting with different manufactures sales and bikes split into classes..
