 |
|
tl;dr DeepSeek is comparable to on-the-market AIs but required a significantly smaller pool of hardware resources to create. Stock market pooped itself.
In the news is a Chinese-made AI upstart that's wiped 17% off the tech stocks Really that means tech company stock prices generally are down with AI-focused companies down a lot (e.g. NVidia).
If there isn't some sort of fiddle going on, the brains behind DeepSeek have taken mediocre "export grade" NVidia hardware and spun the sort of AI gold that would require to 4x to 10x the hardware grunt in the US. It's done by exploiting various communication interconnects to speed up the process. These "software cheats" are very specific to current day hardware but may inform AI architecture design in the future. In other words, this is only the first step in making AIs more efficient so hopefully the world won't burn down from all the heat generated by new datacentres!
In the short term, all the hardware the Big Boys were saying ppl needed has been completely disrupted. That being said, DeepSeek's improvements might be leveraged on all sorts of setups, it's not like you have to throw all your kit in the bin but maybe future purchases will be scaled back. Maybe. And "maybe" is enough for the stock market to have a wobble.
The interesting part is all of DeepSeek's work on their latest AI model has been published in scientific papers and the source code is available on GitHub (bet those lads are busy today!) Anyone with Big Iron to spare - your Googles, Amazons and Microsofts - should be able to replicate the work and, as they have better hardware than the Chinese, give us an answer in 3 ~ 6 months whether DeepSeek is a massive stride in efficiency and by how much.
Note: while the source code for the AI is available I don't know whether you can say the same about the app. I don't think I'll rush to download it on my phone, thank you. ____________________ Royal Enfield Continental GT 535, Husqvarna Vitpilen 401, Yamaha XSR700, Honda Rebel, Yamaha DT175, Suzuki SV650 (loan) Fazer 600, Keeway Superlight 125, 50cc turd scooter |

A quick scan of the paper suggests they've leveraged some new or overlooked techniques to get various nodes to communicate during the learning process. In non-technical terms, it can walk and chew gum at the same time. How much that speeds up the process? Don't know.
There's also some evidence of remnants of other AIs in some of its output so they've trained it or refined it based on other LLMs which isn't cheating per se but does fall into the common AI trap of "garbage in, garbage out".
Oh, and "Don't threaten to murder all humans" has been changed to "Don't threaten the narratives of the CCP" so nothing to worry about there ____________________ Royal Enfield Continental GT 535, Husqvarna Vitpilen 401, Yamaha XSR700, Honda Rebel, Yamaha DT175, Suzuki SV650 (loan) Fazer 600, Keeway Superlight 125, 50cc turd scooter |

In B4 the "AI" turns out to be a sweatshop full of people sat at keyboards.
Like the one that controlled those amazon shops that supposedly tracked what you put in your bag and debited your account automatically as you left- but turned out to be Indian sweatshop workers watching you on CCTV (amazon still deny this was the case). ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. Apparently India is not far behind. Their new AI will be called "Deep Sikh" ____________________ Royal Enfield Continental GT 535, Husqvarna Vitpilen 401, Yamaha XSR700, Honda Rebel, Yamaha DT175, Suzuki SV650 (loan) Fazer 600, Keeway Superlight 125, 50cc turd scooter |
