Trying to persuade a mate back into motorcycling. He has a ponchon for prosaic vehicles from the 70's. It would need to be the right bike. Spectacularly humdrum to the point it's outstandingly so. Not bad bikes, just spectacularly unspectacular.

He currently has a Triumph Dolomite 1300 as his every day driver. Extra points if it came in brown or baby puke yellow.

I'll start the ball rolling with the CB250G5.

Sticking with the honda theme Id say the cd175 for being amazingly reliable but completely soulless to the point of sleep inducing.

Isn’t that the earlier K4, G5’s had upswept exhausts and might be too flash and not humdrum enough for your mate

This is quite challenging. Mediocre but not tedious? Difficult.

It cuts out all mopeds (tediously slow), Brits (unreliable without near permanant attention) 2 strokes (obviously).

We are really just left with a few Hondas.

I was also thinking of the BMW R45. If there are any left that aren't cafe racers.

Was the GT550 not an 80's invention?

We could run through various z's though. Z250 twin for utterly boring dependability. I would say the z400 twin but I have fond memories of mine and any that are still running are likely to shake your fillings out, thanks to the bizarre cam shaft balance weight arrangement.

Definitely a second vote for CB250N, a mate of mine had a fully faired one. It was horrible, the fairing was so dang noisy and it handled like a shit pig.

Benly's were indestructible.

Moto Guzzi v7 might be considered boring by today's standards....

I'm also wondering about the GS850. Just makes it into the 70s by a hair.

If wanting a larger bike, how about the CB500T. Horribly horribly bland and even had a yukky brown saddle to match the yucky brown paint job.

I think thats the first time Ive ever seen anyone suggest the z250 was reliable. They were woefully shite and the oil pump was too small to keep up with the necesary lubrication. Kawasaki in their best wisdom fixed this by overboring it and making the gpz305 with the same dogshit oilpump Laughing

all of the aircooled suzuki 4s of that era are starting to command silly money now, even the heavy and gutless 850g shaftdrive ones.

Small cc XS twins might be worth a look. the 650 twin, 4 bangers and 3 pots all command a high premium these days for what is also not a particularly interesting/powerful engine (although the triple with a decent exhaust does sound like it wants to come into your house on christmas day and piss on your kids).

Oh, now we're talking. A literally forgettable motorcycle.

Agreed, I've known those become downright exciting on occasion.

It'd have to be a late '70s, early '80s Jap twin. The inline 4's would be far too exciting Wink

What about a Hondamatic?

That one might be too exciting a shade of blue.

How about a 1970s orange?

That's a heavy bus to be stuck under. Mate of mine T-boned a van with one (van pulled out of a side road in front of him). He landed up still sat on the bike inside the back of the van minus the front wheel and bottom half of the forks having caved the side door in. Van was written off, he fixed the bike.
