I read worrying things about ABS pumps.. yet some folk post that they let it drain through 'gravity' with the bleed screws open, Some pressure the resevoir, some the old school 'UP' 'DOWN' with an assistant - which is what I've done in the past.. This is the first 'modern' vehicle I've had to do this with. Alas, Youtube is not much help...

Thoughts?

With my vivaro , granted its an 06 but still has abs ive just always bled the brakes like I always have done . I'm no mechanic by any means but surely abs pumps will only be active with the engine on anyway ?

I replaced all the brake fluid about 6 months ago with a pipe and bottle and just pressing the pedal down

Ta.. I'll probly do just this.. I believe the ABS pump 'super bleed' requires some OBD device input too so ...

You're right to be cautious it only needs the sensors to think brakes are no-worky and it can develop into a major computer says no saga where it won't let you start it.

Indeed, seeing as you're not actually opening up the lines by say replacing pipes or hoses or calipers etc, then the bleeding process in itself I should have thought should not trigger computer shit to go boop boop bap bap. Just don't get ahead of yourself and forget to keep topping up the reservoir..

Ok .. just to put this to bed I found this.
Essentially there two levels of bleed.
Standard/regular and 'Exceptional'.. Exceptional requires the operation of an OBD system in this case Mercedes Xentry..

Quote:
Being 2y beyond the recommended 2y interval for my 1st flush, I ended up performing the following break bleeding procedure:

Pressure bleed at 10psi; Rear right (1/4l) -> Rear left (1/4l) -> Front right (1/8l) -> Front left (1/8l)
followed by
Pressure bleed at 10psi with Xentry "exceptional bleed sequence" (bleeds with ABS and break pedal actuation ); the sequence here is Rear left -> Front left -> Front right -> Rear right; Total break fluid consumption was 1.5l

=> total break fluid consumption for both bleeds combined was 2.25l

In Xentry its explicitly stated that exceptional bleeding should be done only after regular bleeding has been done first and only if regular bleeding did not yield a good result (i.e. a spongy feeling)

Generally for anything with ABS I just do a normal change, then trigger the ABS a few times to mix the old stuff with the new.

A brake fluid change is never going to eliminate all of the old stuff and replace with new. It doesn't need to. As long as you've flushed out most of the crap and filled in with mostly-new fluid, it will all mix together. Brake fluid is very good at sorting itself out like that.

Better to do a reasonable brake fluid change frequently, than a really good change less frequently.
