mzriders.com will go phut in less than a week I think.

Obvs there some useful data on there. Its ity possible to 'easily' archive a section? Not necessarily the whole thing - as it's recently fallen into disrepair and spammed into oblivion.

As a practical task, you'd really need access to the backend to save everything e.g. useful attachments. Otherwise you're looking at the same sort of data capture the Internet Archive uses.

So you end up just looking a page of posts and can't open them to read or see pictures etc..?

What do you mean by only wanting to download a section of the website? What are you wanting to exclude?

Ste for mod Wink

The most recent posts are spam. You might like to have a browse to ascertain an appropriate cut-off point.

Apparently this is happening to a lot of small scale forums. New GDPR rules or the Online Safety Bill or something.

Ironically the safest forum (to administer) is one where you don't hold any personal information and host it in foreign lands. So much for discouraging anonymous online trolls Rolling Eyes

David Thompson is who I am referring to. I presumed you frequented the forum in question considering you brought up the topic of archiving it?

If not: the mzriders.com forum is US based forum of which user 'DAVID THOMPSON' who is quite old and has failing health was literally crying out to any of the original forum moderators who haven't actually visited the thing in at least 10 years or 20 because he cannot contact them in any other way. Of course, the forum tech itself is quite old so perhaps they simply don't care, are dead or are indeed uncommunicable. Though the fact David himself has become very quiet (yet has logged on) is queer as he used to be the only one for about 15 years to make sure that spam doesn't occur. Even if he does appear again (and the contract of the forum was also in question), he's got some work to do. 2,700 spam posts a day from just one of the users alone might be annoying to clear. Laughing

Microtransactions. Make it a penny a post and all the spam goes away.

On the other hand I would owe this forum exactly £152.00 as of this missive Laughing

Hi BM

Yes that's him! I signed up to the forum yonks ago (as Daxman) but only just made a post recently when I bought a Skorpion - at that point I notices the Spam and your comment about the Forum closing. I've been eyeing them up for some time and one came available not too far away and I had some funds...

Great shame as some valuable data on there. not to menstion the time that David et al, have put into it.

Yes indeed. I tried to put as much into it as I could too. Restoration threads, technical threads and just clarifying contradictions etc etc.

You could always try the basic and not very comprehensive way of saving specific pages that interest you to a html file the old fashioned way. On the page, right click 'save page as...' ?

in case anyone is still listening, I did a small test this morning,

using
https://github.com/ArchiveTeam/grab-site
on Ubuntu Linux I could grab the forum (I didnt let it finish, just tested, short on disk space)

Then using
https://github.com/webrecorder/webrecorder-player/releases/tag/v1.8.0

I could easily view the grabbed pages.

How easy it would be to get from this format to something else I dont know..but its usable for a private person to run it locally.

RE old forums with valuable info that have fallen into disuse.

Couldn't some canny web boffin type archive the useful, content rich
posts while devising some cunning wheeze to filter out the spam?
It wouldn't have to be perfect and would probably need overseeing
by a yuman of course.

I'm on a forum that make this place look very busy in comparison,
There may not be a new post in a fortnight!
I save useful stuff I find as 'save as webpage complete'
which is admittedly clunky but works.
Luckily the forum is spam free.

You could try the Wayback Machine @ Internet Archive.

The forum and address was leased for another year and addition administrators to address the spam were employed.
