And this is just people appealing against being refused. Jesus wept, we cannot carry on like this. The money being hemorrhaged on hotels is ridiculous.

Statistics from the Ministry of Justice show that at the end of 2024 there were 41,987 asylum appeals in the court's backlog, up from 7,173 at the start of 2023.

Labours response...A government spokesperson said: "The asylum system we inherited was not fit for purpose, which is why we are taking urgent action to restart asylum processing and clear the backlog of cases, which will save the taxpayer an estimated £4 billion over the next two years."

OK, blame the Torys as usual but didn't you help to put the kibosh on the Rwanda plan.

The whole refugee system world wide is not fit for purpose nowadays. It was all set up when the figures were in tens, not thousands.

I see the report of £4B savings goes unchallenged by the Beeb
no surprise there eh?
We know migrants are encouraged to throw passports into the sea when crossing the channel and coached on what to say to claim sanctuary/asylum status.

hence the asylum seeker/immigrant question.
Many of them refused the right to remain are still here years later and
I don't see Liebour taking a hard nosed stance on it all so all this
"saving £4B" is bollox.
It wouldn't surprise me to see them fast track many of these 'seekers'
to make the immigrant numbers look lighter as if they'd done summat useful

We need a DOGE here so we can see what/who this government is throwing money at
Free speech, no chokey for tweets would be nice too of course.................

This seemed like the most appropriate recent thread. Anyhoo, we have all probably had or overheard a conversation down the pub that starts with "When are they gonna sort this immigration problem out?"

Now I'm getting it from customers and business acquaintances at random, no one is shy about talking about it any more. Today, it was a Moroccan fella with a restaurant. When even the immigrants are complaining something's gone very wrong.

All we need to do is have someone go out in a motorised boat with a long stick with a pointy thing on the end, a few jabs to the rubber boats and they won't make it to our shores, and the fish get a free feed at the same time.

It's been broken since Tony Blair was PM. The last time net migration was below 100,000 was 1997 when it was just 48,000 then in 1998 it jumped to 140,000.

Remember when politicians were telling us that they would reduce net migration to the tens of thousands? That seems impossible now.

Before anyone mentions how many immigrants are here on healthcare visas, funnily enough all it not as it seems with that. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c1en4dx7yn9o

words...i hear tens of thousands and probaly think what everybody else thinks....10k...20k..

but what they meant was 99999 and below. i.e. 100k.
as their "best offer m'lord"

They lied then. They lie now. They still lie. 28 years later we're still eating their lies up and cheering.

Yep the Tories throughout the 2010s. Then Boris Johnson abandoned the target, and net migration increased to 745,000 in 2022, before reaching 906,000.

It all comes back to the fact there are already too many people for this country to cope with. What's the point of building 1.5 million homes in five years if you are letting the best part of a million in each year. Whats the point of moving illegal migrants out of hotels into rented accommodation to save money when you are offering way over the going rate to get landlords to accept when you know it's going the push the prices of rented accommodation up for the normal renter.

I look at it in the same way as the power grid (if you recall my post on Spanish power problems.) When you have a stable base - gas turbines, nuclear - it doesn't make much odds if you add a little chaos, i.e. green energy, as the rest of the system can react and account for it.

A large homogeneous population - stable and predictable - can easily absorb some small cultural variations but you get to a certain point... what I'm saying is Birmingham is analogous to the Spanish grid failure.

People are also generally happier. Maybe not happier but at ease at least. "Oh, a white person, we know what the English are like." But when you have diversity every interaction with a stranger is an unknown. People are more guarded. White? English? Maybe... could be Romanian for all I know, they all look the same to me. And brown ppl? Fuck, could be one of the ones we're at war with...

Remember, no matter how much you're told the English are racist everyone else is 10x worse.
