If you can convince the police someone is actually missing then it's trivial for them to inform the phone companies and get a reasonably accurate position for you (within a few hundred metres).
There are plenty of companies like this https://www.mobilelocate.co.uk/index.htm that offer locating services in the UK, I can't imagine all of them will follow the DPA to the letter either... ____________________ current: ducati monster 750

I've just put together a really cheap tracker, complete with Geofence alerts and real-time tracking - I used my old Android G1 phone, unlocked it and then got a data-only SIM from https://www.sambamobile.com/ for £5 (this is a one off cost with no monthly fee, you watch adverts to add extra bandwidth to your account - you can do this from any computer or on the device itself) - I then installed the freebie app from www.followmee.com/download.aspx - now I can set up virtual fences so it alerts me via Email if the bike is moved outside of the predefined zone(s) - or I can just login and look at where the bike is.
I bought a cheap 12v fused socket from eBay and installed it inside the storage box, even when closed it gets a pretty accurate GPS fix (falling back to cell location if it ends up in a building) ____________________ '12 NC700S & '12 CB600F Hornet [Stolen by some dickless twat] Suzuki GT500 shed |
