Following on from the Crashed biker found in ditch alive three days later thread I wondered what was the best app for this?

From the biker thread...

Inspired by this thread I now have phonelocator on my now ancient (but still not eligible for upgrade!) Symbian Nokia N8

that's whats good about the locator apps though. They use GPS and so are accurate down to a few feet. Mines set to refresh every 10 mins...

As said I'm tying phonelocator.mobi as I don't have a need for a tracking log (atm, need may change) and it's the first currently supported Symbian one I found Rolling Eyes

Based on how other people using these can anyone recommend me a locator/tracker app for (1) an old Nokia Windows phone (think it's a N800) and (2) a Sony Ericsson Experia Arc S (so is that some flavour of Android?).

Please feel free to mention iPhone apps as well. I personally have an ABBA policy, anything but bleeding apple!

Also interested in how people use these apps in their normal lives.

Ta.

P.S. Did think about posting this in Geek Zone but thought from the description that was for more IT/PC related stuff.

I had a bunch of friend applications to latitude today. There is an off road bike bash about 1000 km away but I'm not going. Have kids this weekend. So those going want to be on my latitude in case I have to go collect crashed or broken bikes lol!

If you can convince the police someone is actually missing then it's trivial for them to inform the phone companies and get a reasonably accurate position for you (within a few hundred metres).

There are plenty of companies like this https://www.mobilelocate.co.uk/index.htm that offer locating services in the UK, I can't imagine all of them will follow the DPA to the letter either...

I also use LocateA.net and latitude. The locateA can issue a code to give to customers, friends, family etc so they can log on to a page you set up for tracking or direct to the tracking site itself and you can change it when you want them to stop stalking you.

Glympse works for me as it looks better, shows business name and customers can see exactly where and how fast their delivery is moving in real time anywhere in europe. (until the job goes tits and I can block it in seconds)

It's a universal Broadcom GPS chip in the iPhone (same as some Tom Toms and droids) so they can't screw it up too much.

I do find it has real troubles though, unless the person being located is using their phone at the same time.

I've just put together a really cheap tracker, complete with Geofence alerts and real-time tracking - I used my old Android G1 phone, unlocked it and then got a data-only SIM from https://www.sambamobile.com/ for £5 (this is a one off cost with no monthly fee, you watch adverts to add extra bandwidth to your account - you can do this from any computer or on the device itself) - I then installed the freebie app from www.followmee.com/download.aspx - now I can set up virtual fences so it alerts me via Email if the bike is moved outside of the predefined zone(s) - or I can just login and look at where the bike is.
I bought a cheap 12v fused socket from eBay and installed it inside the storage box, even when closed it gets a pretty accurate GPS fix (falling back to cell location if it ends up in a building)

wheres my droid does gps locking and you can set it to stealth so good if you lose your phone...
send it a text to just find it on silent and it will ring and flash the light.
send a gps locater and it sends back 4 texts secretly, stating that it recieved message, longitude/latitude, map link and finally street address.

Android Lost is what I use on my phone, it can do some cool stuff if your phone gets nicked. You can make it display a system pop up that will take a pic with the front facing camera when the message is cleared
