noticed when riding the Thunderace yesterday that there was a loud humming noise at around 5000 revs. its quite a deep sound, reminded me of when someone runs their finger around the rim of a glass.
is this something i need to worry about?

So rev dependant rather than speed dependant?

Rev dependant (so at same revs in different gears) noises will be engine related, anything up to the clutch, speed dependant (at same speed in different gears) will be gearbox/chassis/drivetrain.

Eh? that's a high pitched sound usually - isn't it?

FWIW my speedo made a awful whirring sound recently.

It's probably something vibrating with engine revs. Foot pedals, levers, loose engine mount bolt or exhaust. go around with a hard rubber hammer and keep hitting stuff until you hear a tinny noise.
