I have a Suzuki DR350. It's a "FrankenSuzuki"... the frame is a 1997 model, the engine being from 1991. It has had many previous owners, most of them monkeys, so I am not working on a "clean sheet", and I have had to correct all of the old faults it had. However, it now starts well, "ticks over" like a Swiss watch, will rev to around 5000rpm, but beyond that the engine falters and loses power.

I have changed all the electrical equipment for new items (coil and plug lead, stator, ignition trigger, CDI (I now use an Ignitech unit, a programmable version which allows connecion to a laptop to observe running conditions. This did not identify any problems with the ignition)). The carburettor is clean and jetted correctly - I have also tried larger main jets to see if this had any beneficial effect. It didn't.

Having addressed all obvious possible causes for the running problem, I am now looking elsewhere for a solution. One aspect of the engine I have been unable to check is the camshaft and cam sprocket. I note from the DR350 parts list that there are two types of camshaft:

- part numbers 12711-14D01, 12710-14D70 for models L,M,N,P and R,S,T respectively,

and two types of sprocket:
- 12741-26B00, 12741-14D50 (for LMNP and RST, respectively)

Given the different part numbers for these components I guess they might not be interchangeable. A mismatch might create the engine problem I experience, possibly by altering the valve timing?

Does anyone out there on planet DR350 know how I might identify the sprocket and cam? Are there any obvious markings I should look for?

Any thoughts would be welcome...

Kind regards, Sigean
