I ride a BMW G310R. The OE battery is over 3 years old and has begun to degrade in performance. Specifically, cranking speed is slowing down; occasionally it requires two or three attempts before the starter will engage and crank the motor. In my experience, symptoms like these generally precede battery failure. In order to avoid the possibility of being stranded due to a wonky battery, I have decided to replace it now, before total failure.
I have had very good success with Yuasa batteries, since the 1970's when Yuasa was the OE battery on small displacement Hondas. My one experience with Shorai did not end well (admittedly on a VFR with a compromised charging system). An online compatibility list confirms the YTX9-BS fits a G310R. However, the YT12A-BS mirrors the size and terminal locations of the YTX9 and has more capacity in terms of Amp-Hours and Cold Cranking Amperes. I ordered a YT12A-BS from Ebay and it will be here in a few days.
Here are the differences between the two batteries:
YTX9-BS
8AH
135CCA
YT12A-BS
10AH
175 CCA
Now I am having second thoughts on the YT12A. At first glance, higher capacity and rate of Amps discharge looks like a great advantage for a battery that takes up the same space in the battery box. But what about charging the bigger battery? The G310 electrical system is capable of 308 watts, according to the internet, and that remains constant regardless the size of the battery I fit to the bike. I doubt the larger battery could stress the Regulator/Rectifier. I’m thinking – could having a larger reservoir to fill (larger battery) stress the stator windings? Could a larger battery demand more of the charging system than can be sustained?
Am I overthinking this? There are a number of pretty smart people that frequent BCF. I respect your expertise and ask for your opinion. I can send the new battery back if I change my mind before filling it. Once the cells are filled with electrolyte, returning the battery is no longer an option. What do you think? Is the Yuasa YT12A-BS battery a good idea or not? ____________________ History shows again and again how nature points out the folly of men - BOC |
