I am thinking about doing my own valve clearance check: it seems like it would be a long and tedious job (CBR600) but not intrinsically difficult. I've changed the spark plugs before, so I'm confident I can at least get that far into the engine. And it's not a VFR, so there's that

However: the bike lives outside and I don't have anywhere under cover to work on it. I am thinking I could get something like a telecoms splicing tent (if anyone makes one that's big enough to get me and the bike underneath) or a marquee with sides, and it would protect somewhat against sudden rainstorm or children running around the garden,

Have you done bike work in a tent? Would you? Obvs I'm not going to start the engine in an enclosed space

Takes maybe 2.5 hours, think they are shims so if any need doing about 4 hours.
Never used a shelter of any kind, just throw a cover over it if it rains.

When people set up pits at club racing events, most of them use a gazeebo for working on the bikes in. One of the ones with the scissor joints you can just extend and telescope the legs down on rather than one with a frame you need to assemble.

The valves on a normal VFR750 are easier to do than the ones on a CBR6. Once the airbox and tank is off, the rocker covers are just looking at you and the gear driven cams just unbolt and lift off. Also they don't need doing, I checked mine at 50k miles and they were all in spec. I believe the VTEC ones are more of a hassle.

The CBR6 is all accessable and it's a fairly straightforward job but the alloy frame ones have a cross spar that is in the way of almost everything.

Yeah, it was the VTEC ones I was thinking of. Not that I know, I just hear talk.

Gazebo might be the answer, or just wait a few months for some more-likely-to-be-dry weather. Though everything I read on the internet says nobody _ever_ had valve clearances outside spec at 16k on a CBR600, it's just going to niggle at me unless I actually check.

Remember to put new plugs in while you're in there. From memory, they are a ballache to get at/out and you may as well while you are in the vicinity.

Any delays will come if one of more of the shims do need changing and you have to wait for parts. just checking though doesn't require huge effort compared to changing (some bikes like my FZ are 'cams out' to change which is a royal PITA).
