Hi folks..

giving the Falco a once over and thought I'd check the valves as no-one can ever be arsed to to that it seems (a few were tight and need changing Neutral ) In doing so you have to remove air box and throttle bodies etc.. Airbox was oily probably about 50ml of oil swilling about inside. I preseume this has come from the breather and likely caused buy overfilling - usual dry sump issue.

Cold after not runiing for several day/weeks oild level is over halfway up sight 'glass on teh oil tank. when on sidestand. I'm thinking I should extract some oil maybe 1/2 litre using a turkey baster or similar..

What y'all think?

PS oil filter is reusable sponge type and is also pretty oily - should I clean with petrol? brake cleaner? something else?

As I recall from having an oil in frame dry sump motor in my MZ660, there was a procedure for checking the oil level. As I remember you had to warm up the engine, run it at idle for a period of several minutes then shut it off and wait for a specified period of time. Then check the oil level. This accounted for it scrubbing out any "wet sumping" from the crankcase and for oil to settle back down from the top end.

Can't see how reducing it to minimum on the sight glass then doing that procedure would do any harm. A dry sump motor will run fine and get oil everywhere it needs to be as long as the pickup is covered.

Someone on here years ago used to top off a hand soap pump dispenser to remove over-filled oil from their bike. i thought that was a smart idea.

Soak up the worst of it with a rag/paper towel, then clean it in hot, soapy water, rinse and dry.

I'll add, my enfield is a dry sump motor (a really basic one) and periodically it'll "wet sump" due to a mathematical oddity where all the holes in the oil pumps (which are piston pumps) align when the engine stops, giving the oil a straight run through from the oil tank to the crank feed. OR if it's been parked for a long time and the oil's just found its way there. I usually remember to park it on compression which raises the crank pin higher than the feed and largely prevents this but I sometimes forget.

If it happens, it's not usually an issue, a couple of minutes on idle clears the sump and puts it back where it's supposed to be. However, if I've had a brain fart, it wet sumps and I check the oil level with it cold, find it low and top it up. I can land up with it both wet sumped and with WAY too much oil in. If I run it then, it pukes a load of oil out through the breather.

On mine, I have a bunded breather that returns most of it to the oil tank but if that wasn't there, it would just make a hellish mess round where the breather comes out (in my case, the chain).

If your wet sumped, it would breathe it out into the airbox. So that oil might just be from one incident. Or it could be you checked and topped up the oil level while it was wet sumped and inadvertantly added a whole load extra.

Now you will have a WAY more efficient oil pump so I'd expect it to suck any excess oil up after a few seconds. What I'm getting to is if you come to it after it's been parked up for a bit and the oil level seems low, don't top it up until after you've run the motor unless it's out of sight low.
